Unity Candle

I am planning on doing a unity candle in our ceremony.  Our minister said that our moms would light it before the ceremony started and then during the ceremony, my FI and I would light ours.  I kind of wanted our moms lighting it to be a part of the ceremony.  Is there anyone that is doing it this way, or when did you incorporate it into your ceremony?

    I've always seen it at the beginning of the ceremony.  I'm not sure exactly what you are picturing, but I would consider this to be a part of the ceremony still.  It's not like the moms will light this before any guests arrive.  Generally, your moms will light the candles and take their seat.  Immediately after, the bridal party begins their walk down the aisle.

    If you are not a fan of this, you can eliminate the mom part entirely.  Since we had a ceremony outside and didn't expect the candles to stay lit for long, my groom and I each lit one of the outside candles and immediately lit the center candle.  I still feel like it symbolized the same thing and may be an alternative for you.

    You can definately have them come up and light it during the ceremony and right before the two of you light the middle one, but as my officiant said, its great in pics that both the pillars are lit during the entire ceremony. Plus like PP said its a little less of an interuption during the ceremony but it would only take a few seconds, if thats how you want to have it done, thats just fine

    he has 4 kids and i have 4 kids. my mother is still alive but his is not with us anymore.   Would it be ok if i got one of both of our children to light the candel?
