BBQ Reception

So I'm doing Lexington BBQ as my meat for my picnic style reception. For those of you who have done it before, how much BBQ did you get and for how many people? Did you have tons left over or were people looking around for more?

I'm looking at around 80 people and have gotten estimates from needing 30lbs to 50lbs of pork to feed them all.

Oh and there will be BBQ slaw, coleslaw, rolls, and quite a few side dishes available as well. Stuff like veggie and fruit platters, chips, dip, various salads and such.

Just to let you know, when we got a piggy for our pig pickn for the 4th of july, we were told to average at LEAST a 1lb to 1.5lbs per person (accounts for the heavy eaters and what not).

So for 60 people, we went with a 100lb pig. (Delicious btw). For that, it cost us about 180. I will say though, we had two large freezer bags left over. However, I'm attributing the lack of eating due to the heat and all of the other sides that were brought.

I think 30-50 lbs for 80 people, isn't enough. However that's just me. I'd rather have too much and have some left overs, instead of not having enough.

Yea, I was thinking those estimates were a lil low, especially since we've got a ton of teenage/college age guys in my family - those boys can put away some pork!!

I think I may talk to my grandma and see how much she gets for the family reunion every year, since it'll be the same people anyways.

My dad is also talking about how he can pick up a couple of smoked pig parts and do the cutting for me so it'll cut down on cost (instead of paying almost $10/lb at the local BBQ places).

Yeah, I meant to add that we cooked and cut all the meat ourselves. So that probably cut down our cost as opposed to having the meat cooked and prepared by someone else.

However I will say, sometimes it's just easier to have someone else do it for you, if the cost isn't a huge difference / problem.

I'm not sure in terms of pounds of meet, but for my graduation party last year, we got pork shoulders that we cooked and then chopped up. We got two shoulders and it was more than plenty to feed the 30 people...so if you're doing it in terms of that, I would get 6 shoulders for 80 people.

**Edit: We got ours at the Nahunta at the Farmer's Market in Raleigh and they were DELISH!

Who are you getting the estimates from?  Who are you getting the BBQ from?

Estimates have been from asking various friends who throw BBQs regularly as well as a few BBQ places. I thought it sounded low so I figured I'd see what y'all thought about it.

As for who I'm getting it from, I'm not sure. It depends on whether its more cost effective to buy it pre-pulled from someplace like Little Richards (which is where my grandma gets it for reunions) or to get the smoked pork and have my dad chop it up and just pick up the sauce somewhere.

Right now I'm trying to figure out estimates so I know how much I'm going to have to put away for the reception. I already know that the honeymoon and the reception are going to be my biggest costs, I just need to get an idea of how big a cost.

Have you called Lexington BBQ?  I know they cater a lot of big events, and ship their pork all over, so they'll probably have good info on what you might need.

Also, it may be a little less costly to get Lexington style a little outside of town.  Both BBQ Shack and Tommy's BBQ in Thomasville are good, and usually cost a little less that those in L-town.

ETA: I see now where you said you were considering Little Richard's, so you've picked up on the part about going outside the city limits already.  Carry on.

We are planning on doing bbq for our reception and we were told to have 8-10 oz a person.  We too are having lots of sides and will possibly have sausage to go along or a second entree choice.  We are doing 150 people, so we will probably get around 80-85 lbs.  HTH!

Well I just found someplace that is a serious contender for catering the reception - apparently Stamey's does catering. Here's the link to their prices, what do y'all think about them?

I've been discussing guests with my parents and it looks like it's going to be closer to 100 people than 80 invited and I think $8.45 per person is pretty good (they deduct $1 if you only want one meat).

Have you ever had their BBQ?  Lexington BBQ lovers will tell you that "their" place is the only one that's any good.  I'd suggest dining around before you decide.

I've had Stamey's before and I liked it - however my mom apparently prefers Little Richard's or Pig-Pickin's... and dad prefers Little Richard's or some place in Kernersville. I've had all of them but the place in K-ville and really don't have a preference.

So I have a feeling I'm going to be going with Little Richards since it seems like it's a family favorite. Next I'll have to call them up and get an idea of prices on their packages so I know what to save up.
