Question about booking hair/make-up

Sooo I am starting to look at booking the hair/make up artist for me and my girls. I want it done on-location, which really narrows down my choices. So my question is: how do I know who to book? I mean, just based on price and reviews? Because you do your trial after you book them, right? How does this all work? I guess I'm just pretty clueless on this aspect. Any thoughts/advice or whatever on how to do this would be much appreciated!

Re: Question about booking hair/make-up

  • I based my trials on reviews and and I ultimately booked my MUA bc of the trial.

I booked my hair stylist bc of my fi, he gets his hair cut by the owner of a full service salon and reccomended one of the girls there.  I went to get my hair done by her and fell in love.  It's officially became my new salon after that haircut!

  • You can either book someone up front and then do your trial. Or, if you dont know anyone who has used them before, you can have your trial right away and then decide on booking them. I would have done that if I hadnt known girls who have gone where I am going. Normally they have a "Look Book" as well so you can see their work.

  • The way I'm going about it is to look at the reviews of people on the detroit board and then go to the website to look deeper into each location.  Then I'll call them to make sure I have the right info and schedule one or two trials.  If I like the first I plan to just go with them.

  • I'm having my hair and makeup done on-location as well. For my makeup artist, I made sure she was available on my day and booked a trial with her. I didn't have to book her for my wedding, but I ended up doing that after the trial.

My hair stylist was able to do the same thing, but since she is very popular, I went ahead and put a deposit in for the wedding before my trial. I did that on the basis of online reviews, pictures of her work, and references I contacted myself.

  • I did my makeup trial before I booked. If I didn't like it I would have done trials with others until I found someone I liked.

For hair, my regular salon stylist is just coming to the house, so that was booked without a trial and I'll do one closer to the wedding. I already know I like her.

  • I booked my hair and makeup artist before my trial (still haven't had one, actually). She was recommended, her photos she had up on facebook looked good, and her prices were reasonable, so I decided to book her. I'll probably make my trial appointment for early next year. I guess it depends on what you're comfortable with. With me, as long as she can make my hair look good and cover up my acne and acne scars I'm good haha. She specializes in weddings, so I trust her. If it were just a regular salon I'd want a trial first.

  • I'm doing my own makeup and I booked my hairstylist because she did my hair for dances in high school and I was happy with her
  • My regular hairdresser is doing our hair so we're getting ready at her salon.

I just booked a trial with a makeup artist that gets rave reviews on my local board.  I'm sure I'll go with her as long as the trial isn't terrible.  I had to pay for the trial but she takes pictures and writes down everything she does so she can recreate it even 6 months later for the wedding.
