Timeline

I was wondering when I should meet with the music director and other people in the church to plan things. Thanks :)

Have you already met with the priest and set a date?  Have you started your marriage prep?

Looks like you're not getting married until 8/2012.  Most churches won't allow you to set a date until you are 6 mo to a year out.  Definitely wait until you have a confirmed date with the priest.

If you have a confirmed date, great!  But you don't need to start planning music, etc until a little closer to the date.  We knocked the music out in one meeting, a month and a half before the wedding.

We do have the date set and have started the marriage prep. My uncle is doing the wedding, but he had no connection to our parish. So sometimes questions arise from either party and I am a go between to find answers. I guess I am wondering what type of timeframe these things are usually done in. I feel bad emailing both and having to wait awhile to find out an answer.

Contact them about 3-4 months in advance to book the date, and then meet with them 1-2 months in advance to determine the details.

Please book the musician as soon as a date is set. Music directors have lives outside of the weddings at their church and they don't hold necessarily hold them open. They take vacations too.

They will then lead you about when to meet to plan music.

I contacted the music director soon after I got our wedding date pencilled in the church schedule book.  She already knew about the wedding, but it was nice to confirm that she would be in town and available on that day.  She told me when she wanted us to meet to talk about music and other ceremony details.

I think each church is different. Our church  gave us a booklet of what to do about everything. As far as music they said no contact is necessary. All we do is mail a check to their house at least 6 weeks prior to our wedding. All our music is done via an online planning tool. They discuss with our deacon if there are any changes.

Our Church booklet states that we don't meet with the Priest reagrding the readings or the Organist regarding the music until we are at 8 weeks before our wedding date.

Our church did not allow us to select musicians until our date was set & our deposit had been paid. We were then required to notify our Wedding Coordinator which musicians we had selected as our pianist and cantor by our 3 month mark. Now, it's a matter of coordinating our music selection....eeek!

Our Church will not let couples be married in less than 6 months from the first time they meet with the preist. As far as music coordination goes, they are very relaxed.

I would get in touch with your orgainst/musician as soon as you have  a date set just to be sure you are on their calendar, then work with them on when to meet to go over specifics.

I called our organist shortly after we had met with the priest to set our date, so that we could get on her calendar.  I asked then when we should meet with her about music selections, and her response was 'oh, wait awhile...'

I caught her after Mass a couple of weeks back, and she was to email me some info, but I never got anything.  Our wedding is in a little over 3 months, so I am getting a little bit concerned.  I think we'll try to catch her after Mass again this week to see if we can set up a time to go over music details, or at least figure out how long before the wedding we need to do this, as before we know it we'll be running out of time!

Please don't "catch" a music director after mass. That is the busiest time (especially if they have another mass starting soon after). They aren't where they can write stuff down, attention is pulled in a lot of different directions.
