STDs 6-9 months before the wedding.  12 is OK.  Invites are 6-8 weeks before the wedding -- not to exceed 8 weeks.  RSVP date should never be more than 4 weeks before the wedding date.

I think for a destination wedding you can be a little more relaxed with the mailing out and rsvp date deadlines...especially since people will have to travel thus purchase plane tix and make accommodation arrangements.  My plan was to have an rsvp date 2.5 to 3 months prior to our wedding but that is not happening so we will probably change it to 2 months prior as we are still awaiting our proofs in the mail.  HTH! Agreed. We are having our RSVP date for our AHR a little earlier than etiquette guidelines say so we have time to figure it all out, make the calls, and get the final headcount to the venue a week before we leave for Hawaii for the wedding. I figure we'll be so busy getting ready to leave we won't want to deal with it that close to the wedding.

Yes I was hoping to send them out earlier than the norm for planning purposes. Also for budget reasons.....filet mignon vs. prime rib depending on how many people are coming. Also certain restaurants charge heft minimums but if I have less then anticipated we can pick a different place...uuughhh so much to consider!

Since we have a small group I was thinking of this timeline:

Sept. 2011 -STD with website link so they can plan ahead and/or save up
Feb-March - Verbal reminders and current travel costs updated on website
    April 2012- Send formal invites
July 2012- RSVP date and follow up with stragglers
August 2012- Send out travel newletter to the yes group
    Sept. 2012- Wedding!

    How does it sound?

Well, since we are doing the DW I threw all the guidelines out the window.  We needed to know a general idea of numbers quite a bit out in order to budget our money accordingly.  I send out our STD's on our 1 year out date (July 5, 2010) and we included an 'Intentions' card that just let us know if people were even entertaining the idea of coming.  Then, I sent out our invitations on Feb. 14th (the day we got engaged) and we had an RSVP date of April 1st for our July 5th, 2011 wedding.

Of course, last week someone popped up as being able to come to our wedding, so be ready - some people just don't care about being considerate.  Luckily, last night we had 2 people who had to pull out of coming so our numbers aren't totally screwed up.  I personally just feel with a DW that you can be a lot more flexible as to when things 'should' be done.

We set up a website (still working on it), but met up with all the close friends and family we really want there, and gave them 1 years notice.  No cards though, just verbal.  Everyone else is getting an invite 2-3 months before.  If they make it, cool, if not, oh well.  It was our way to cut down on numbers without having distant family feel bad about not getting invited.
