Planning a wedding from another state-please help!

I live in NC and family is up in MA so after trying to plan something that would work in NC and failing we are going to try to do MA or RI (Fiance is from RI).
It will be a small wedding 50-60 guests and I'd like to be able to do the ceremony/reception in one place but I can be flexible on that.  I want to do the traditional cocktail hour, plated dinner and dancing so I need a small venue that can accommodate those wishes.  I am looking for an October of 2012 date...and I don't want to go crazy on the budget.  I am thinking (hoping) to spend no more than 5K on the venue with food, drink, tables, chairs, plates, linens, etc. included.  Is that realistic?  In NC I could make that happen but not sure about MA or RI.
With ALL that said...I would appreciate budget friendly suggestions from you!  I looked online and saw and liked the sapphire estate, Lombardo's, Indian Pond CC, The lantana, Spring Valley CC, and in RI I saw a restaurant called eleven forty nine that does receptions.
Please chime in ladies and help an out of state bride to be!  :)

  • Congrats! Planning an out of state wedding adds such a huge level of stress to already existing stress, so more power to ya!
I won't sugar coat it, in RI that $5k price tag will be a little tough. I'd suggest scoping out Glen Manor House in Portsmouth or North Beach Clubhouse in Narragansett. Both can be completely self contained and are on the smaller side. Both also require outside catering so that allows some flexibility. You'll also find cost savings if you're willing to do a Friday night or Sunday affair. And you have a small guest count so that'll help. Other ways to trim cost without losing too much is having only open bar for beer and wine.
    Good luck!

I second the North Beach Clubhouse.  With an October date - if the weather is nice, you can do the ceremony on their deck over-looking the beach without too many people on the beach!  The rental cost for the JUST the venue is $700 on Fridays and $1000 on Saturdays.

Good Luck!  I too am planning a RI from out-of-state...its tough!

  • Cav Restaurant in Providence has a small court yard ideal for wedding ceremonies and the food is superb.

There's also Waterplace Park Restaurant but I am not sure of the pricing there.

  • I am using Newport Beach Hotel and Suites for my wedding in November. There is a park across the street where you could do the ceremony. They have been very accommodating and aren't too pricey
  • You might just make it for capacity but try the Waterman Grille in Providence.  They have a beautiful private room that overlooks the water, and the food in fabulous!

If this doesn't work out you may want to explor other restaurant options.  1149 has great food but I'm not sure about the private function space.  It seems to be pretty busy and loud so I don't know if you would get the privacy and intimate feel you may want for your wedding.

I would suggest looking into the Bristol Harbor Inn in Bristol, RI. It is a lovely venue on the harbor and you could have both your ceremony and reception there. Because it is attached to an inn, it would also be very convenient for any out of town guests should they wish to stay there. If you would consider a Sunday wedding, $5,000 would definitely be feasible there. I would definitely recommend that you contact Rafaela Radke, the wedding coordinator there, and ask her about your options for your budget and guest list. She is flexible and tries to be very accomodating.

The North Beach Clubhouse, as others mentioned, is another really nice option. You could also look into Cohasset Harbor Inn or the Atlantica in Cohasset, MA. It would be perfect for a wedding of your size and it could work for your budget. http://www.cohassetharborresort.com/chi.php It's also on a harbor and very scenic; and again, you could hold both your ceremony and reception there.

Another option is the Meadow Brook Inn in Charlestown, RI, which is definitely reasonably priced; or try looking into country clubs that don't have minimum spending requirements. I believe Wanamoisett Country Club in Rumford, RI could fit your budget.  Lastly, you might also want to look into Bed and Breakfasts, which can be perfect for an intimate wedding.
  • Wow!  Thanks so much for all the suggestions...I'll look into these and report back.
  • Just wanted to say best of luck planning from out of state - I planned from NC too. Obviously the cons are the distance, but I actually really liked that I did spurts of planning (online and phone planning before we traveled narrowing it down to "x" amount of places/people to meet and then meeting people when we were in RI). It allowed me to not obsess over little details which I tend to do. Also, the ladies here are a great resource - we booked quite a few people without meeting them in person prior to our wedding day and they did a fantastic job.
  • Hi!  I'm having our reception at Wannamoisett Country Club in East Providence, RI this December.  Julie (the manager) is wonderful to work with, and I think your budget would definitely work there.  However, the ballroom is big enough to hold 200, so the wedding might look swamped.  The ballroom is gorgeous, though!  It's renovated with a fireplace inside of it.

I second the Bristol Harbor Inn (my co-worker got married under the tent there outside, then had 100 guests inside in September 09 and it was  great), as well as Waterman Grille (would be perfect for 50-60 guests).

    Best of luck!
