Ideas for something different for bridesmaids to carry?

I'm looking for some offbeat ideas for things--besides flowers--I can have my bridesmaids carry in our wedding. I've seen suggestions for flower balls, candles, lanterns, and purses, none of which are up my alley. We're doing a mid-afternoon outdoor wedding in August at a barn--we're pretty casual, so flowers just seem kind of over the top. We're not religious, so anything along those lines is also out. I'm open to DIY ideas--just want something a little quirky and different. Help!

    Wheat?

    Feathers?

For a casual wedding in August at a barn, I think casually tied bouquets of Queen Anne's Lace, black-eyed susans, and other wildflowers would look very pretty (and you can pick them in just about any field for free).

A book of love poems or sonnets?  Or for that matter any book?  A Bible?  A basket filled with....something? or nothing?

A single flower wouldn't be over the top. Just a long stem with ribbons tied around it.

I love OWN's idea about the wheat.  That would be so cute and definitely appropriate for a wedding near a barn.

I was at a summer outdoor wedding where the BM's carried beautiful fans.  It was stunning and kept them cool during the ceremony!

I actually kind of like where you're going with the horseshoes--we're planning on playing some outdoor games (croquet, bags, etc), so that would sort of tie in. Maybe if I tied ribbons around them or something...

I was also thinking of trying to make small flags that spelled out a message of some kind, but I'm stumped there too.

    I second the wheat sheaves.

You could also have them carry the old fashioned tin lanterns.

For my daughter's wedding I had some of her young cousins present her and her husband with a horseshoe as they exited the Church (an old Scottish tradition.)

PIP of the horseshoe, it might give you some idea of how you could decorate one.

I love the fan idea, and the parasol idea. The horseshoes might also be cute if they were decorated like the picture above.

I also saw a knottie do button bouquets.t I'm not sure that fits, but it is cute.

For my wedding, and they were kind of heavy... i took glass bowls - sort of like mini goldfish bowls with a fluted edge, often used for floating flowers or candles in them.  I put flowers in them and then took what looked like a regular hurricane lamp globe except it had a bottom to it. I put a votive candle in there and set it on top of the bowl.  I also tied a ribbon around the neck of the bowl.  They carried these, then afterwards they were place around the reception hall to give more candlelight. Afterwards they each took them home.

They were pretty and easy to do.   When they carried them the hand their hands kind of under them and to the back so people could see the flowers and the lighted candle.

No one had hair long enough that we had to worry about it swinging in to the hurricane globe.

I don't know if you can picture what I'm describing from my text or not.

I've been to a wedding where the entire wedding party carried/wore cotton. In theory, this was kind of neat but the wedding was on the hottest day of the year and the bride's bouqet caught on fire! Intense!

LOL I know I shouldn't laugh, but picturing a bride carrying a flaming bouquet down the aisle had me chuckling.
