Does "Trendy" Bother You?

I have had to look around a bit for different versions of the wedding band i want because I do not think I will be able to afford the one I want. I went on the designer's site and found a similar version, except with no diamonds on it, and it was half the price. I was pretty happy about that, but then i saw that it was the exact style worn in the movie The Vow, and was featured in magazines and whatnot. I HATE trendy stuff. If something is "in" or if everyone has it, I avoid it like crazy. So now I am pretty upset that I thought I found something special and the whole freakin world is gonna start wearing that band. I saw the other version of that band before i was even engaged and I have loved it since, so it's really dissappointing that now I might have no choice but to be a trend-follower.

Do you follow trends? Would it bother you if you found out some part of your wedding was now all the rage? Are there any wedding trends you love right now?

I just do me... if that happens to fit a trend, so be it, but that won't be why I choose to do it.

I don't follow trends just to follow them. If I like something and it just so happens to be trendy it doesn't bother me. My wedding is very rustic/chic/DIY which seems to be very trendy right now. I like the style, and that's all that matters to me.

I don't think anyone is going to look at your ring and go OMG! Is that the ring from the Vow? I've seen the movie and couldn't pick that ring out from a ring line up if my life depended on it. If it's something YOU like, who cares if it's trendy right now. 5 years from now it probably won't be trendy and no one will remember it. If you don't get this ring will you regret it and wish you had? You're the one who has to wear it everyday, get whatever you makes you happy.

I am just me and if it is trendy so be it.

For example I knew the general colors I wanted since I was young and now that I am engaged Fuschia pink is apparently very trendy do not care it is the color i want and like and what will be in my wedding. I guess so is using birch bark for fall weddings but I have liked the concept not b/c it is trendy I just like the feel and look of the vases.

I get alot more of "wait you are getting married in the fall outdoors and your colors are fuschia pink and ocean blue but those are spring and summer colors"-do not care those are my colors I do not like deep red, orange, yellow, or gold. Those colors will be present in the fall foilage not as my wedding colors.

Just do what you want and like who cares if it is trendy or not. If you like that ring and want it get it-i honestly would not know if a ring came from the vow or any other movie and I am a pretty big movie buff but I do not pay attention to that kind of stuff-maybe a hairstyle or clothing but I tend not to pay attention to jewelry and not everything in movies is going to be trendy anyways. If it makes you happy get it who cares what the rest of the world thinks it is your ring and your wedding

This makes you sound like a Hipster, and ridiculous. If you love it whothefuckcares who else has the same band as you? If I love something I get it. Hell, if I like something I buy it. So, my answer is if you love the band and want it, plus you can afford it I would buy it.

Wedding trends I love? I love everything about weddings. The rustic chic thing is fantastic. There are a ton of great ideas which have helped me in planning. Thank god it is trendy right now of else I would have no idea what to do.

This exactly. I named my son Noah... duh. I loved the classic and timeless name but had no idea that he'd share the same name as other kids his age.

I am often inspired by things I see, whether it be trendy or not, and then put my spin on it to make it more my own.

Nah, trendy doesn't really bother me. If you like it, get it. That being said, I kind of get where you are coming from. My sisters and most of my firends have a certain cut for their engagement ring, so I was adament to not have that same cut. But on the other hand, I always wanted at black, white and red wedding, which is pretty trendy (at least here), and I'm still going with it.

Hahaha I am not being snarky at all. I am being honest. The second I read that all I thought of was oh hipster. It is ridiculous that you would avoid buying something you love b/c it is trendy. Why would you care if someone had the same band as you?

Eh. I'm with cowgirl on this one. And I love your posts sparent. But I HATE when people look at my E ring and exclaim "OH EVERYONE Has a ring like that nowadays." I didn't pick it but I still love it, but it just comes off so shitastic when people say that to you. (My E ring is a radiant cut with halo and split shank.) I adore the ring but I hate the comments.

So honestly, I would look for something else because I guarantee you will get the comments I have and I bet it will irritate you from what your first post said.

Just adding here at the end that I really love my ring. Its amazing and FI picked out and did a nice job. I may have picked something different but he decided to go do it on his own, which makes me happy. I just think its beyond rude when people exclaim that everyone else has a similar ring.

I don't like to be too mainstream so it would bother me but wouldn't stop me if that makes sense. I think wedding bands should be timeless since you will be wearing it for life. So, if it is "trendy" because it is unusual and potentially not timeless, I'd take more time to consider it. I didn't see the movie so if it is "trendy" because she was a classy lady and it is timeless, I would get it because YOU love it. If some a$$hole says something about it being from The Vow, just lie and say you had no idea and you got it because it fits your personality. If it fit your style back when you got engaged, the movie hadn't even been out yet. At some point in our lives all of our wedding bands will be trendy as things come and go so kinda hard to avoid mainstream for our whole lives.

I really don't give a sh*t either way honestly. My ring is more vintage looking which way be a trend but I love it and couldn't be happier. Fades will go away but if you like what you have then go with it. If I happen to like a trend (neons!!!) then I'm all over it. If not (crop tops) I move right along. I wouldn't worry about it. I do kind of agree that saying you HATE trendy things is a little ridiculous because what if you like something, then it becomes trendy? Do you hate it? That's just what came to my mind. Just go with what you like and be happy with it.

I personally can't imagine avoiding something I love just because its trendy right now. Trends come and go... you're going to be wearing your ring for the rest of your life. So it may be trendy now, but very soon that trend will bow down to a new one and it will pass. Maybe my black diamond ring with be the next big trend then, you never know... but trends are always changing so I wouldn't base something long term on that.

Here's my thinking:

You have to weigh out how often people would recognize it and how much that would bother you (probably not often and for maybe 2 years) with how much you wanna look at it for the next 50 years on your hand-

Pro/Con list- GO!

Also, I don't know if this is of help, but somebody saw my ring (snarky ex-coworker) and said to me- "Ugh- he went with that tacky white gold. It's so trendy now, but you're going to regret it."

I don't remember what I said back, but it was curt and polite. What I didn't mention was it's my Gram's platinum ring from the 40's and wasn't reset- it's exactly what she picked out.

I used to be like that - avoid trendy things like the plague. Mostly in high school because I thought it made me cool and different. Now, I don't care. If it's trendy and I like it, awesome. Trends come and go so quickly anyway.

I will say though, that I'm over the whole "vintage" wedding thing. That's all bridal magazines and websites feature anymore.

Whoa! People can be so rude!!! Sounds like she was extremely jealous or something. It would have been hard for me to be polite at that point. My ring is white gold, and I think it is beautiful! People who look just at the style of a ring are missing the main point of what it ultimately symbolizes. And when I imagine my FI going on his own to pick out my ring, I am overcome by how sweet that is.
As for the trendy ring issue, I'd just go with what you like! If you avoid something just because it's trendy, you kind of end up in a different trend. Kind of like all those high schoolers who try to dress in goth and look scary to not fit in with all the other cliques. They end up making their own, which in the end makes them look pretty silly and is kind of pointless.

I don't think people realize just how hurtful some comments can be when giving their opinions on wedding choices and such. We spend so much time trying to figure out the details of this very special day and to have someone knock any little part of it really stings. At the end of the day, you have to look at what you have planned and be confident that you have made all the decisions and choices that work with your vision and not someone else's; whether it be "trendy" or not.

On a side note, I was thinking of doing my hair something like this for the wedding... your thoughts?? LOL

I am in the same boat. My FI and I had a long engagement. When I got my ring I hadnt seen any like it (its antique style) Now that is the "in" thing.... I have always wanted that style ring...so although I am lik ugghhh everyone has my ring now I am over it cause I know in my heart its the one he wanted me to have. I also have chosen the colors Black and White loooonnngggggg before Kim Kardashian but everyone now equates that to her train wreck weddin. But again even though its a trend now its always appealed to me as classic elegance so I am sticking with it !! If you love it then keep loving it no matter what !!

This reminds me of the episode of Doug where the outfit he has been wearing for years suddenly becomes popular and he keeps trying to tell people that he was NOT trying to fit in and be like everyone else. haha.

I would stil get it if you love it. Not everyone has seen the movie and even if they did, they might not remember what it looked like.

Trendy bothers me when it comes to weddings because I imagine looking back at photos in 30 years and thinking 'god, remember when xxxxx was every-damn-where?' or just having the focus be on how dated everything looks, rather than the JOY of the wedding day. For example, I love my mom's bridesmaids burgandy halter dresses, I HATE my aunt's little bo peep-esque bridesmaid dresses from the early 80s. The burgandy was more classic and timeless, the other dresses, not so much.

With the wedding band, it sounds pretty plain, so I think you've got that in your favor as far as it looking 'timeless,' and in 5 years, no one will remember The Vow, let alone the jewelry in the movie.

I talked to my mom about it and she agrees with me, which surprised me. She thinks I should get the more expensive one instead of settling for the one I can afford and am not 100% into. I just don't want years of "Oh my niece/sister/cousin/friend got the same ring!." I'm def no hipster, for the record. I don't make it a point to avoid trends and then make it my personal statement in life, its just that I find most trendy things stupid. Silly bands... stupid. Neon colored clothes.... very 80s, and stupid. Skinny jeans.... really stupid.
