Is registering for china greedy?

Yesterday we went to register at Macy's.  Most of the stuff we registered for was under $100; a coffeemaker, kitchen tools, etc.

We also registered for china.  Lenox, at $123 a placesetting.

I am feeling extraordinarily guilty about this.  I know people don't have to buy it for me if they don't want.  But does it look bad to even register for something like that in this day and age?

I minored in Social Work in college so maybe I am more sensitive to this than most...I keep thinking about how some people in the US literally live in boxes and I am asking for $1200 in dishes.

As for using it, I would say we host 1-2 big famiily events per year, and probably 6 more casual friend dinners that I would likely use the china for.  The pattern is beautiful; we both love it.  And yes, we picked matching Lenox silverware.

I would like to know what you guys think...did you register for fine china?  I think I will feel better if I feel this is the norm and I am not going to shock people when they look at my registry.

P.S.  Here it is :-)  http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/lenox-dinnerware-bellina-collection?ID=183488&PseudoCat=se-xx-xx-xx.esn_results

Absolutely not! China is a classic, traditional gift that many people EXPECT to see on a wedding registry. Plus, I think a lot of people (especially older relatives like grandparents) look forward to gifting brides and grooms with a place setting or other piece from their china set.

Your china is definitely on the expensive side - Lenox is gorgeous, but not cheap. Ours was only $54.99 / placesetting, so some people gave us multiple placesettings as gifts (one couple gave us 4!). However, as long as you have gifts at various pricepoints on your registry, people should be able to find a gift within their budget.

I wouldn't side-eye this. I actually like the idea, because it's not like someone has to buy $1200 worth of the stuff at once. People can buy bits and pieces depending on their budget. Especially since it's something that you'll use regularly. I think you're fine to do this.

No, it's not greedy to register for china!  A lot of people prefer to buy something like that as a wedding gift.

We got berated by one of the registry consultants at Macy's for NOT registering for china or crystal!

China is such a traditional wedding gift for most, so no it doesn't look greedy. I completely get where you're coming from though. Like others have said, as long as you have things in a wide price range, I think you'll be okay.

We created ours before we had to postpone and coincidentally almost everything was under $100 except for 2 appliances.

I don't think it's greedy.  Everyone is different, and China is not really a shocker to see on any registry.  It's on of the traditional registry items.

We are not registering for fine china because it just doesn't fit our personality and my grandmother is gifting me her set someday.   Instead, we registered for an everyday set at Crate and Barrel (blue stoneware called Nuit), and this feels fancy to me!   It's $79 a place setting.  But we do have a large variety of cheaper items on the list as well as more expensive items on the list - even some furniture!

I think you should never expect to get everything, but people love choices!  When I look at registries, I love when they have a large variety of items so that I can decide where my budget lies and what I want to give them that they will use.

We registered for china as well and I am happy to say that all 16 sets + all of the extras AND the crystal that we registered for were all purchased. We have used it 5 times since October and I LOVE it - everyone who bought us a set has mentioned how they can't wait to have dinner with us on our china sets! I do not think your china is expencive at all - remember regular price at Macy's is NOT what the customer will purchase it for... our's was tagged at $190/set and on average people purchased it for about $100. I say if you love it, keep it don't think twice about it... what's the worst people could do... not purchase it? That's fine!

PS you should watch your mail for when Macy sends out china promotion offers for the bride and groom - we did and actually gave it to my mother in law because she asked for it but becuase she wanted to purchase a couple sets and with it she got a HUGE discount and got platters for free with it!

No, registering for China isn't greedy.  I think it's a normal gift to see on a registry.  I did not register for china, though - it really isn't something that is important to me.

One of the things I think of when I see someone who registerd for china, along with matching silverwear and servingwear is...What if their guests only buy a few of the items?  Would the bride and groom be able to afford to purchase the remaining pieces if they don't get everything?

For example, I saw a registry once that registered for $90 place settings, several serving pieces that were $200+ (even for salt and pepper shakers!) as well as expensive silverwear.  I know they only got a few of their placesettings and a few of their silverwear settings so wondered what happened - if they had to return what they got or just lived with a partial set of china.

So I guess my take on it is...definitely go ahead and register for china, but make sure you have a plan for how you would handle if you only got some of the pieces!

I didn't register for china because I already have more family china than I will ever use but I certainly wouldn't side-eye china on a wedding registry unless it was like gold plated $900/setting or something.

We registered for formal silverware and china and got all but 2 placesettings.  I think it is a very traditional gift item and some folks like that aspect when they're selecting a wedding gift to give a couple.

I don't think it's greedy at all to register for china. We originally registered for china at Macy's, but found some place settings at Crate & Barrel that we wanted more, so we took the china off the Macy's registry. I think it's completely normal the register for china.

It's a gift that transcends time.  I'm about to pass my grandmother's china on to my soon-to-be-married daughter.  She will have china that came over by boat in the 19th century.  You'll be able to pass on your china after you enjoy it for many years and for many special occasions.  Besides, if you don't buy it now, you likely won't get it.  Congrats!

It's pretty typical!  I think it would only be unreasonable if you think the a large portion of your guests wouldn't be able to afford it.  From the sounds of it, you kept a larger proportion of your registry items at a pretty reasonable price.  My sister did the whole shebang with china (Lenox place settings, serving pieces, silverware)... and they got everything... but had a HUGE guestlist.  My husband and I registered for individual pieces from the Fitz & Floyd "Nevaeh" bone china collection at BBB:

    Beautiful pattern choice, BTW!
