Dress Shopping - opinions wanted!

Just curious, are there other June 2013 brides who haven't started dress shopping yet?!  I was trying to hold off so I could lose a bit of weight before going - figuring I will start trying on dresses around the end of August but I'm getting nervous if that will be enough time.  I feel like I'm getting mixed messages from people - some thinking its too soon, others too late!  Just looking for some opinions. :)

Thanks!

The rule of thumb is that it can take 6-8 months for a dress to come in, and then you need maybe 3 months for alterations... some places will do rush orders for a little bit more, so if budget isn't as big a concern and you double-check that the store you're going to will do rush orders, you could certainly wait a little longer.   If you don't want to deal with rush shipping, I'd maybe start sooner so your order is placed by mid-August just to be safe!  You can always have your dress taken in once you start alterations ;-)

My dress only took 6 weeks to come in, since Alfred Angelo tends to have the Disney dresses ready to go out pretty quickly (they told us that once it came in, of course), so I certainly ordered mine far too early! Luckily I have a cedar closet to keep it in until the wedding.

  • I'm holding off till early Sept so that my mom (who is paying for the dress) has some time to save up for it. That still gives 8-9 months for it to come in and get alterations done.. I'm getting kind of anxious myself about it, but I don't want my mom to feel the financial reprucussions of my decisions to do it earlier

  • I was planning on holding off until Sept as well because I wanted to lose some weight. I ended up going for the first time in June and was surprised at how flattering wedding dresses are. I have it narrowed down to 4 dresses, all at the same store and they told me I can hold off to order/make a decision until end of September because the dresses will only take about 4 months tops to come in.

  • I'm going on Labor Day weekend, but I'm not ordering until at least November.

  • my appointment is August 18th. I think it's the perfect time to start shopping. I was worried that if I started too soon, that I would pick something and end up not liking it later on. I have it narrowed down to just a few dresses (been looking online for a while), so hopefully it will only take one trip!

  • I've ordered mine a couple months ago, but the only reason I did so is because we are trying to spread out our budget, so I wanted to get the dress as one of the first big checks. But I think if you go dress shopping in August you will still have plenty of time to get the dress and make alterations.

  • A lot fo it depends on if you're ordering, which it sounds like you are. If there are specific designers you plan to look at you cna call dress shops and ask for the timeline for those designers. Alfred Angelo dresses tend to come in at about the 1-2 month mark. I'm drooling ver a Maggie Sottero dress and was told hers take the full eight months. If you know a general ordering timeframe you cna adjust when to go shopping based on that.

  • I ordered mine in June because I found the one I loved during an event. It was also a Maggie dress and is taking about 6 months to come in(projected right now.) One thing they warned me about is brands like Maggie that are made in China, the factories shut down for almost a month at the begining of the year for Chinese new years which if your dress is over that time can lengthen the time it takes to get it. Best thing is call the salons that carry the brands your drawn towards and ask them about any of these concerns so you know when they recommend ordering by.
