help with junior BM dresses??

So, I finally made the decision to ask my cousin and my fiance's cousin (both teenagers) to be junior bridesmaids. I am super close with both of them, and was sad that I didn't have a way to involve them in the wedding, so I am thrilled about how excited they both are. (They actually both started crying when I asked them! My cousin's favorite TV show is Say Yes To The Dress even though she is only 15.....so obviously it was a good decision to ask her :) )

Now I am trying to figure out the best way to dress them.  As you may recall from a few weeks ago, this is my BM dress:

http://www.dessy.com/dresses/bridesmaid/D516/?color=quarry&colorid=1025

Our colors are platinum, lavendar, ivory, and black accenting.  The BMs will be in quarry with purple and ivory flowers, and purple accessories, with black shoes.

Do you think it would be cute for the Juniors to be in the same Quarry color, but in a different style? Should I put them in purple?

here are a few of the styles that I thought would be cute for the teenagers:

http://www.dessy.com/dresses/bridesmaid/D518/?color=quarry&colorid=1025
http://www.dessy.com/dresses/bridesmaid/d488/?color=quarry&colorid=1025
http://www.dessy.com/dresses/bridesmaid/d476/?color=quarry&colorid=1025

the style that says it is specifically for junior BMs isn't my favorite but does come in junior's sizing http://www.dessy.com/dresses/junior-bridesmaid/jr504/?color=quarry&colorid=1025

Does anyone else have junior BMs? If so, what are they wearing, and how does it differ from your regular BMs?

Thanks in advance ladies!!!

I don't have Junior BMs (I already have 8 BMs and that's already an 18 person bridal party!), but if I did have them, I would have them wear the same color, just in a "younger" variation of the same type of dress. On that note, I like the third link the best (http://www.dessy.com/dresses/bridesmaid/d476/?color=quarry&colorid=1025)

In any event, I'd do short dresses that are just a little frillier (is that a word?) but still in quarry. And maybe do their bouquets in one solid color (either ivory or lavendar) to further distinguish them.

Edit - Unless they are a super small, they should be able to fit into the smaller "Women's" sizes. I am 5' and about 90 lbs and I usually fit into the smallest woman's size clothing, but I also oftemtimes fit into Size 12s in children's clothing (please do not laugh at me). I wouldn't be too concerned with Juniors sizing.

  • Are they both 15? I think 14 or older you should def be fine putting them in regular BM dresses rather than something designed specifically for junior BMs. Two of my BMs are teenagers and they are wearing the same as the others.

If you want them to be distinct, I would say choose a similar style (like the ones you linked to), but I think it would look best to keep it the same color, just because your other colors are so bold. Putting them in purple and a diff style dress may be too much that they would kind of stick out. I like all three of the ones you linked to, but I think the 2nd one is my favorite!

  • I have two 15 year old girls in my WP as well. At first I didn't think I wanted them to wear the same dress as the other girls. Once we went shopping and tried on dresses my favorite dress on both the teenagers and the adults was the same so they are all getting the same dress.

I'm also not calling the two girls junior bridesmaids. They are my cousins and I'm close to both of them and wanted them to be in my wedding.

If you want them in a different dress the second one is my favorite. Whatever you decide will look great and the girls will have a great time!

  • I have 3 Jr. bridesmaids who are all in highschool. I decided to put them in a shoter dress similar to the sr. bridesmaids dress and i put them in a different shade. My colors are purple and yellow so my sr. girls are wearing a floor length wisteria dress and my jr. girls are wearing a tea length lilac dress. the two colors and dresses look great together and it sets them apart a little bit.

  • If they both are fifteen, I would drop the 'junior' and just call them bridesmaids if it isn't too late for that yet. There's no need to make them stand out because of their age. I think the BM dress you picked is perfectly fine to wear for 15 yo, it's modest and would still fit nicely if they don't have the same roundings as your adult bridesmaids yet.

If you pick another dress, I'd go with the second.

  • I have a JR Bridesmaid and purposly looked at designers whose dresses also came in JR. BM sizes.  So my JR is wearing the same dress as everyone else.
  • You could perhaps narrow it down to 2 and ask for each girls opinion on which they would rather wear.
If you do go the bridesmaid dress route though, you will have to decide fairly quickly and get the order in so it comes on time!
I personally like option 3 best, and I think putting them in a lavender, maybe like the jubilee color, would help them stand out. The gray would make them look older i think, but the lavender looks more JBM like to me.
Of course I had to be difficult and pick the option no one else has yet. Sorry!

  • My Jr. BM is only 11 so its easy to see that she is a junior bridesmaid. I had all the girl pick their own dresses so I allowed her to do the same. None of them match, but they all are wearing the same color (jade).

  • Love, Love, love dress number 2!  It's so playful and youthful.  It could be cute to have them wear a different color but if you choose for them to wear a different dress then it might be better to keep it all the same color IMO.  Maybe you could have them wear a cute hair accessory in one of your accent colors.

My JR BM is 8 and she is going to be wearing the same things as my other BM's but with straps so it looks more her age instead of strapless like the rest of my BM.

BTW i like the second one with the belt. I think it is cute, but since you said there were teenagers i would go with the fun strapless one.

  • this board is the best - thank you so much for all of the feedback!!

since i am slightly older than some brides (27!) and my juniors are 15 and 16, i think  i would like to keep them designated as junior BMs just because the relationship that I have is different than with my other BMs who are between 27 and 31.  as much as i LOVE my BM dresses, i think the younger girls would look cuter and more age appropriate in something a little less slinky.

i really do love all three of the options i presented, so i think i will just send them to the girls and see what their thoughts are!

bridetobe, i LOVE the idea of having their bouquet be different!  the BM bouquets will be a few different shades of lavendar + some ivory.  the juniors would look adorable with just bright purple bouquets! i think the dresses will fit them just fine since they do come in 00, as you said....worst case scenario will be that they need a little bit of tailoring!

and i love the idea of giving the juniors a fun hairpiece too!

macfam it is such a great idea to put them in a slightly different shade - that is going to look so cute! it just wouldn't really work with my girls being in silver.

I am actually 28, lol. and my BM range from 28-38. My niece who is my JRBM like i said is 8 and i didn't want to put her in a strapless dress, just doesn't look right. So i think you pick the right dresses for your girls, plus I like your idea of different bouquets.

    Older??? I'm 29!

And yeah, I've seen this done pretty successfully before - It distinguishes them without adding too many colors into the photographs. Because really, the only time they really need distinguishing is in the photos. The rest of the time, it'll be obvious they're younger/junior (not drinking, etc.) but they will still obviously be part of the BP. :)

hahaha i didn't mean to make it sound like i think i am old....i just think that with a 21-23 year old bride, it would make more sense for a teenager to be an actual BM as opposed to a JBM...when the age gap is a little bigger, like in my instance, i wanted to clarify the difference while still including them. at least, that is how my rambled logic is working in my brain :)

and i think the photos will be adorable, especially with the different bouquets! i can't wait to see how it all looks haha!

Anyone under 30 is young in my opinion (which is why I love calling my fiance old - he's 31 :) )

  • I love the 1st dress you have  linked for the Junior BMs.
I think that one would look best since it has the same neckline and shoulders but the bottom half is different.  This dress to clear any confusion on which I'm talking about.
    http://www.dessy.com/dresses/bridesmaid/D518/?color=quarry&colorid=1025

I also agree with you about the dress they have for the juniors sizing (the last you linked). I don't really like it either.

  • I have six BM's who will be wearing B2 designer in the colors "melon, carrot, and cosmopolitan" in dresses that they chose (each BM in a different color and alternating). I am having two junior BM's, both 12 yrs old, and i just happened to find a dress from  dessy (style# 6776 i think), its citrus ombre....and its perfect!!! it comes with spaghetti straps which we will be using and its streaks of all three colors of the BM's dress colors! All the dresses are long and chiffon, so even though they are different syles/colors, they will all flow nicely together for a unique look.

  • I was thinking that I really liked the first one since it has the same top/neckline as your BM's and would really make it cohesive.  I really like the light purple they have with the quarry color of the sr. BM's.
