posting a lot today...NWR -tell me about your jobs!

I think some of us may have interesting jobs here on this board! i already know what some of you do, but I'd like to hear about the rest!

What do you do and how did you get into that job?

I've been working various contract jobs since I graduated college in 2010. None of them are using my diploma, but I'm not interested in that field anymore.  I'm currently an admin assistant for a child care company.  i'm also a photographer!

Re: posting a lot today...NWR -tell me about your jobs!

  • I am currently finishing my bachelors degree in healthcare administration. I work a lot of odd jobs right now modeling, promo work, babysitting, some marketing and street team work for my photographer friends.

  • I'm an environmental engineer for a large engineering consulting firm. It's the field I got my BS (2009) and MS (2010) in and I love what I do.  I work in site remediation - we basically clean up all the crap in the soil and groundwater that is there from past poor waste practices (ie before the EPA existed and said you can't throw nasty stuff in the ground).  The site I work on right now is an oil refinery and it presents a lot of challenges.  I got this job by applying through careerbuilder.com and kicking butt at the interview.
  • I am a social worker! I originally got into the field because I had counseling with my school social worker in middle school and decided I wanted her job. And I did get to work for a school...briefly ...then I got laid off because the number of students in the program I worked for got cut and I was the most recent hire so I had zero seniority. That's how I wound up with my current job...it was a case of apply for everything and take what you can get! Now I do diagnostic evaluations and new patient orientation for a very large mental health clinic. I've been here three years, which is frankly longer than I thought I'd stay. It's not what I want to do forever, but I like it enough that I'm willing to stay until the time is right. Right now the plan is for me to quit when H and I have a baby, spend a couple years working part time and raising the kid, and then look for a job that will allow me to get back to working with children.

neat! i went to school for environmental technology, so did my fiance.  he actually works as an environmental field technician now
  • I'm an Enterprise Account Manager at MapMyFitness (hope some of you love our apps, MapMyRun, MapMyWalk or MapMyRide!). I handle all of the client-facing software development projects with a team of fantastic software engineers.

My New Year's resolution in 2012 was to make a career change to a company where I could walk to work and I believed in the product. I got the job after 4 years working in digital marketing and account management and the office is a block and a half from where we live!

  • Right now I am a supervisor for an Engine Assembly Line.  My degree is in Mechical engineering and the summer before I graduated I got a chance to do an internship at the engine plant doing plant engineering, then got a job out of college at the same plant.  I was in engineering for 3.5 years before I got moved to my current position to learn to deal with people.  It has been crazy to be doing a job that I know I'm not good at while being engaged and planning a wedding, but by the grace of God, I'm getting through it until the next door opens up.
  • I work in a small options group home with intellectually challenged adults. I started working there while I was still in university getting my BSc in psychology. I've been here about 3 or 4 years now (I forget), but I've been looking for new a job lately. I don't mind doing personal care, but I would like a job without it because I don't want to do that for the rest of my life. I'm also going to apply to go back to school soon for social work starting next year, it'll give me a lot more opportunities for work. Which will be good when H gets posted somewhere else.
  • Right now I'm a ride operator at an amusement park. This is the third park I've worked in (the first is where I met DH). I got it because DH and I decided to move to Tennessee over the summer. He got a job at the park first, then his supervisor hired me to work on a different ride. I'm also trying to start a photography business. I'm a part-time photography student right now at a community college and love every second of it. I can't wait until it becomes my full-time job because I love everything about photography.

  • I manage a team of eleven, they function as project managers - but have neither the title nor the pay. I have been here 12 and 1/2 years. It can be stressful, I'm on call for their escalations 24/7, but I am personally invested in my crew and very protective of them!

Until May of 2011, I worked 2-4 jobs for the previous seven years. The last few were the full 4 - I also taught three evenings (co-facilitating a program for juvenile offenders and their parent/guardian), worked a 12.5 hr shift on Saturdays answering phones/directing customers at a dealership, and cleaning a realty office on Sundays.

  • I'm an attorney, and work for myself in my solo law practice. FI and I met at law school actually!
  • I work in marketing/communications/PR, specifically for the entrepreneruship center at a university in Chicago. I love it because the job is challenging and constantly evolving, and it combines my love of writing, "being creative", and strategic thinking. Also, working with a student whocomes to school with an idea, and watching them grow it into a real business over their time here is so rewarding.

Before here, I worked at a large public relations agency for several years. That was fun, too.
  • I do in home care for a family, not a company. I work in their home taking care of their mentally/physically handicapped son who has tubular sclerosis, seizures and other disorders. I have worked here for 8 years now, and kind of fell into the job (thankfully!).  My sister worked here before me and was going on vacation - they were either going to hire someone, or I was offered a job with them.

All in all its a great job, but I have always thought of it as temporary. They are like a second family to me, but at the same time, I am in their house. It's like a roommate type story where you love the people, but when you are "living" with them, you figure out all of the bad things about them.

I am currently in the Dental assisting program, and hope to finish within the next year so I can move on to a career.

  • Interesting thread!
I am a speech language pathologist in an elementary school.  I have just started my 11th year. I got into the field because I was looking for a job working with kids.  My older sister was completing her masters in speech pathology at the time.  I decided to take the intro class and it was great.
My job is rewarding, challenging, always evolving yet mundane at times!  It's a great combination, really.

  • I'm currently finishing my BA in Business and Organizational Communcation. I have interned at United Way in Resource Development and I am interviewing to intern at a local hospital next semster in the HR department. I am really hoping to get an HR job once I graduate, but I'll take anything that will provide good experience. Currently, I'm a server, which sucks, but I make great money, which allows me to work less than I would have to at a minimum wage job, so it will do for now.
