Hotel Block

HI, I'm getting married in NOLA in May of 2012. I took extra care to make sure I wasn't doing it during Jazzfest and also trying to avoid Memorial Day weekend. Well, I ended up planning it on the weekend of all of the college graduations (who knew!). It is turning out that all of the hotels are super expensive that weekend, around $150 per night for a mediocre hotel. I'm wondering if that is reasonable or should I just not do a hotel block at all. I think people could definitely get a better rate closer to time, but doing it in a block so far ahead of time is just jacking the price up. Thanks for your opinions!

I would do the block as long as you can cancel at some point and not have to pay for unused rooms.  We have blocks, too.  Some people have gone on line and found better deals.  The rates and deals fluctuate.  Some people will procrastinate and the block will be the best deal they can get.  On another note, we travel to NOLA frequently and have found more and more that there is something going on almost every weekend and that  $150 per night for a mediocre hotel is more the norm.  I miss the cheap rates but I'm glad to see the city recovering.

I got married the exact same weekend this year, and actually most hotels wouldn't even let me block rooms because they were expecting such a huge influx that weekend.  I ended up getting graduation information from Loyola's website and telling my OOT guests to make reservations under the graduation room blocks.  Rooms that were going for 183.00 at the Riverside Hilton were 129 on the graduation room block.  A little unconventional, but it saved my family money and worked out great. (I happened to be graduating that weekend too, but none of my relatives were in town for that; just for the wedding). Loyola or Tulane's websites should have commencement info with hotels etc. as the dates get closer.   Bonus: they usually block at about 12 hotels so your guests can have their choice.

That's all great information, thank you for the input. We were down there about a month ago and paid $60 a night at Le Pavillon...I'll miss the days of such great deals!!!

The vest deals are sadly during the week. We had the misfortune of having a home saints game the day of our wedding and are dealing with prices close to what you mentioned. We did get a great deal at the Veat Western French Quarter which has just been remodeled. Good luck.

email the new orleans visitor and tourist center. it should be easy to find online. i emailed them what i was looking for and they sent out emails to all the hotels in the area. i had about 15-20 hotels email me with the prices for room blocks. I went with Hampton Inn on convention center blvd. It was $130/night which was the lowest around and the rooms are sooo nice! my wedding is also on St.Patricks day so this is the lowest price i got for a holiday weekend. good luck!
