Can anything else go wrong?

I haven't posted in FOREVER, but I need to vent.

Word of advice. When you have family friends that are bakers, do not ask them to do your wedding cake.

My dad's friend has a bakery shop. He offered to do our cake as a gift. Being a gift and all, no paperwork was signed, nothing really set in stone. Well, two weeks ago, he 'realized' that our wedding was during hunting season, so not only was he not going to be able to do our cake, but he wasn't going to come to the wedding at all.

We had another family friend offer, and we accepted, since we never budgeted for cake, we would take what we could get. The next day she backed out because she didn't feel comfortable doing a wedding cake, whatever that means.

My mom mentioned the situation to a group of her friends, and someone else stepped up to do the cake. At this point we offered to pay for the cake. She said no worries, she'd be happy to do it. I just got a message from my mom saying this person just called and said she couldn't do it anymore. No explaination.

All I want is a simple cake. No frills. I can't believe we've had three people back out. So frustrating.

THEN, on top of it all, I just found out that my photographers contract does not include any rights to our pictures. All we get is a low res proof cd, with no printing rights. It's an extra 600 to get the rights. I'm so frustrated with myself that I didn't catch this sooner.

I'm only waiting for more to go wrong, since I've been hearing horror stories about the coordinator at our venue. :-\

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your back luck with the cake.  If you really don't have much budget, could you bake cupcakes yourself?  They would be no frills, but it's something that would be a fraction of the cost of a big cake.  Or you could go to Costco and buy some simple round cakes and display them.

As for the photographer, that is the one big thing you should have looked for in the contract.  That is a bummer, but I would definitly try to find that money.

Set up a meeting with the venue coordinator to start planning day of things out.  If it doesn't seem like she/he will be up to snuff, I would probably find my most trusted aunt to kind of being there to step in....

  • I'm so sorry this is happening to you. I've heard that Publix does good (and fairly inexpensive) cakes.

  • PP's both have  good ideas....costco and publix both make delicious cakes without being crazy expensive. I would check into both of those!! Sorry about the luck :( Hopefully all of the bad stuff will get out of its way before the wedding.

Hopefully you can find the money to budget for your print rights...that's definitely a big thing!!

  • When my MOH got married, they were on a seriously low budget, so they had their cake made at Wal Mart.  I was honestly amazed at how good it tasted, and how pretty it was (very classic, plain white, with a few decorations).  Maybe something like that could be an option?

  • Oh wow, what a crazy up and down with the cake! I agree with the previous - baking up a huge batch of cupcakes or checking out local grocers. You will have to transport the cake - but definitely budget friendly ideas!

I have no idea on the photographer // WC. I just want it to work out for you! My photographer does pics, OR the CD for another $100. I don't want to print anything, and needed to save the $100 - but now I don't know anymore.

  • I have a friend who doesn't own a bakery but is in that line who said they would bake our cake as our gift. I do have a backup plan though-buy pretty premade cake at one of a few nice bakeries and town to display and buy sheet cakes to serve. I feel much better knowing I have the backup plan. If for some reason she backs out I will know by the day before at the latest (she's baking the cake at my house) which will give me plenty of time to buy two or three cakes.
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!
