better for weight loss/strength: yoga v. pilates

Which one is better? (I will also add a little bit of cardiovascular each day.)

Re: better for weight loss/strength: yoga v. pilates

  • both are great! I'm a big yoga fan so I incorporate that in my routine but I throw pilates in there every once in a while.
    Can you alternate?
  • Oh yeah, I thought to ask if one was better, but I guess they compliment each other. :)

  • I love yoga for stress and some great stretching, I also notice when I do it alot that it tones my arms quickly.
I like the core focus of pilates and it's supposed to lengthen and tone your muscles.
So either one would be a great addition
  • DO you have any existing injuries?
Yoga can push it if you do... I won't do straight yoga classes because I have a bad back and the last time I did it I could get out of bed the next day :/ (yay for a bad baack at the age of 23.. lol)
My gym has something called Body Flow and it's yoga/pilates fushion. If your gym has both, give them both a try! Neither will make you LOSE weight exactly.. that requires multiple factors, but both will help you become more flexible (which is important) and give you some core strength training.
  • I don't have existing injuries. I'm following my food intake on MFP and do some cardio on weekdays. :)

  • I do a little bit of a yoga/pilates combo routine that I love.  I like the core focus of pilates, too, and it has been pretty good at toning.

  • I actually heard a story the other week on npr that said that although yoga is great for strength and toning it actually slows down your metabolism (so it is harder to lose weight) since it puts you in a relaxed state.
  • ^ maybe, but probably just for that time frame.. although I would be okay with a slower metabolism if that means it's because I'm more relaxed all the time!
Also, it would depend on the yoga, since there are about 6 different types. I think you're thinking of the article about Broad's "The Science of Yoga" ? I have been dying to read that book... But any time you slow your heart rate, you slow your metabolism. That's just.. how the body works. So Hatha yoga, focused on stretching, breathing, and deep relaxation, is definitely going to help slow your heart rate down and therefore slow your metabolism.
I don't think there is anyone in the world that will say, "yeah, I got fat because I did yoga" though.
I am somewhat anti-yoga myself, and I do think that Pilates is  (for the most part) more strength-training focused than yoga, but I would never say yoga is horrible and makes it harder to lose weight.
  • I think both are great exercises for different reasons.  Yes, Yoga can slow your heart rate down (depending on the class)but when you are done you feel really relaxed.

My personal favorite yoga class is heat yoga.  The studio at my gym does not get as hot as a normal heat yoga session you really keep your heart rate up and detox your body.  I find that I can hold my stretches deeper and it is usually the best night of sleep I get.
