vow renewal

we are having an outdoor wedding with a JP officiating.  can we renew our vows at a later point in our marriage (say 5 or 10 years) in the church?  or is that only reserved for people who have been married in the church?

i am going to answer under the assumption that at least one of you is catholic.

you could possibly be granted wha'ts called a "convalidation".  this is not the same as a vow renewal.

a vow renewal is you doing just that - renewing your vows.  you are already married.

a convalidation is actually  marrying you in the eyes of the church.  in getting married by a JOP, teh catholic church does not consider you validly married.

convalidations are usually granted only in certain circumstances.  for example, if you are catholic and have fallen away from teh church, marry out of the church, then later in life you wish to return to active practice and you want your marriage recognized.  that would be a reason.  another reason is if you wre married in teh church, but for some reason the marriage was not done correctly or was done by someone who did not have the authority to perform marraiges.  that would be a reason for convalidation.

if you are knowingly marrying outside fo teh church for purposes of being able to have an outside wedding, you most likely will not be granted a convalidatoin unless you can somehow prove extenuating circumstances.  basically, you have to have a really good reason as a practicing catholic why you chose to marry outside of the church to begin with.
