Northern New Jersey venue with a view of NYC skyline

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting here.  I have been engaged almost a year and we are finally starting to plan our wedding, which is to be held in April 2014.  We are looking to have a wedding of 250 to 300 people.  We have an international theme we want to carry through in our wedding (my fiance is Scottish and I'm American) so I'm hoping to find an affordable venue with a view of NYC and then throw in lots of Scottish touches throughout the wedding. Our budget is still under discussion, besides the venue I know we are going to have alot of additional expenses so I am really hoping to keep the price per person to less than $80pp and I am completely open to a Saturday afternoon or Sunday afternoon wedding as well.

I have been lurking around these boards looking at venue suggestions, and currently the venues that I know of with a gorgeous NYC view are the Jersey City Hyatt on the Hudson, Liberty House, Harborside, Newark Club, Waterside, and the Palisadium.  I am in the process of negotiating with these venues/have set up visits with them, but I am wondering if you guys have any other suggestions for places to look at?  I prefer a venue with a NYC view but if you have any other suggestions for a venue that can portray our international theme, then I'm totally open to that too!

Good luck! I don't want to discourage you but even on a Sunday all of the places you mentioned are out of your price range.  We wanted a NYC view too but it wasn't in our budget so we took all of our pics with the skyline and held our reception inland.

  • Really?  Some of the price quotes I received from the venues I listed above for a Sunday afternoon wedding actually fall below 80pp.  We don't want an open bar at our wedding or any alcohol in general so that reduced the price significantly at some of the venues.

You could also check out Chart House and Maritime Parc.  Congrats on your engagement!
  • I was also going to suggest Maritime Parc

I just read the no alcohol thing. I know it's a Sunday afternoon but you wouldn't even have mimosas or bloody marys and you are inviting that many? I am not saying that is a bad thing but just something to consider....

  • In regards to the no alcohol aspect, my family is Muslim and quite religious so alcohol in any form would not be appropriate for my wedding!

Maybe without alcohol you might be able to swing it. I was going off of their standard pricing.

  • Your family might not want some cocktails, but what about his family?  The no alcohol thing is something to reconsider.  I don't think its appropriate to nix something just because one side of the family wouldn't want it there.

One of my best friends is Muslim and when we all go out to a function or just dinner, she is never offended when we order cocktails.  And yes, she too is highly religious.

  • Both of our families (as well as me and my fiance) are equally religious, and would not want any alcohol at the wedding.  So the not having any alcohol at the wedding has never been a topic of discussion for us as me and my fiance ourselves don't drink and the majority of our friends who will also be at the wedding are super respectful of that and our families.
  • These are pretty much the same places we looked at! We were also interested in the NYC skyline. Based on my experience with Maritime Parc, Liberty House, and Waterside, I couldn't imagine you could book them for $80pp. I wasn't looking at Sunday though.

I looked through some of my e-mails (these are from early 2012) and here is what I'm seeing for Sunday prices:
    Maritime starts at $150.
Liberty House-$130 for a daytime event/$185 for a nighttime event (10% discount for Sunday)
    Waterside - $140 per person
These do not include tax, gratuities, etc.
  • I'm not sure of Waterside's ability to negotiate on a Sunday now, but when i booked in Dec 2010 for an Aug 2011 wedding, they were able to work with our budget - don't be discouraged YET.  We did scale back quite a bit, but they MAY be willing to work with your budget if you are flexible on a date.  What looks like a bigger challenge is the size of your guest list 250-300 people - the waterside is NOT able to accomodate a party that large.  We had 145 and I would say to cap at 160 there.  YOu may want to have a conversation with each of the venues about their capacity before you spend time visiting them all.
  • What about Highlawn Paviliion? It's in West Orange, and could be in that range - with an open bar, I believe it can be around $125 on a Saturday afternoon. A Sunday with no alcohol could be around $80.

    Good luck!

<div>There's no way 250-300 people would fit at Highlawn.  We looked at it and felt that our 120-130 would be tight.</div>

  • We are having our wedding on the Destiny Ship... booked through East Coast Yacht cruises... That boat can hold roughly 400 people... We are leaving from Weehawken, and going around the Hudson River... They have great packages! Check them out!
