Trying to help a friend

A close friend of mine was supposed to get married almost two years ago, but his FI called it off about a month before the wedding.  He got the ring back and after lots of healing, he now is ready to get rid of it for "closure."  He went to the jewler and they are only willing to give him a fraction of his money to buy the ring back.  Any ideas?  I have suggested craigslist and e-bay but he is really apprehensive to that idea because he is afraid he wont see any money.  I appreciate any suggestions.

TIA!

My first suggestion was going to be Craigslist :-P

He could try selling it to a pawn shop.

Does it cost any money to get one of those safe transactions accounts like paypal? A lot of ebay sellers use those.

He could still do Craig's List if the transaction is done in person. He could bring the ring and the other party could bring the cash and they trade in a safe location.

I would check out a few different pawn shops, or else go the ebay route and require the buyer to use paypal for the transaction.

If you're going to try Craigslist or Ebay, I'd make sure he gets the ring appraised and even offer to meet a potential buyer at a jeweler to get appraised with them. Post quality pics too! I stalk Craisglist for wedding things when I'm bored, and run across lots of ads for rings that are terrible! Don't say anything about how horrible his ex is!

My FI finally sold his ex's ring after a few years and he got no where near what he paid for it. Way less than half! He didn't try Craigslist or Ebay, just checked at like every pawn shop he could think of. He ended up going to Pawn America a few different times and got a few different quotes, so he went with the highest one and was done with it. And yes, I pressured him to get rid of it. Why do I want that thing around!? :)
