Wedding Dress

does anyone have a suggestion on bridal shops - i have been trying to get in touch with the bridal building in NYC - is that a good place to start or am I going to be overwhelmed?  my wedding is the end of april so time is of the essence

I went to two shops in NJ.  Not sure what area you're looking in, but I went to Sew N Sew Bridal in Lafayette and The Wedding Store at Liz Clinton in Andover.

I ordered my dress from Park Avenue Bridal in Verona.  I have had a really good experience there so far.

I would call lots of bridal shops and ask if they have a large selection of dresses that can be purchased off the rack rather than by special order.  Then go from there.  You're going to have to get something off the rack.  David's Bridal and J. Crew come to mind.

I had my best experience at Bijou Bridal in Paramus, but did not get the dress there.

I bought it at Pronovias in Manhattan, which was also a great experience.

what made you decide on that particular one?  was it a recommendation?  and did you check out others before you decided on that one --- i've been to 3 so far - just not blown away....I want to be blown away - that will be my dress - just don't want to be blown away by the price ...... I know verona is pretty upscale - is that reflected in their dress prices?

I agree with Uppereast.  Perhaps you can ask if samples are available for sale at some shops (if you are comfortable with that)

what did you think of them?  how were the prices?
  • edited December 2011
sounds expensive and do they have a large selection - my wedding is the end of April...
  • edited December 2011
that's a very good suggestion - I thought of David's Bridal but J Crew - really?  I did not know they sold Bridal dresses.....I will check it out

whick one did you finally go with - your dress is beautiful....

Listen to what uppereast is telling you.  If your wedding is the end of April you need to buy a dress off the rack or a sample dress off the rack.  Most wedding dresses take anywhere from 4-9 months to come in when ordered.  Call lots of stores, find out what they have and go.

Yup -- mostly on their website, but I believe they also have some selection at their Rockefeller Center store.

Yes, Rock Center does but I think you have to ask to see them or they are by the fitting rooms.  Not sure if Garden State has any to try on but worth a call.  They have very pretty, simple dresses.

Try Group USA, since you need something quick. I went to the Jersey Gardens location and they actually had some nice stuff available. Plus there was a good selection of stuff under $1K.

rmuratschew, just FYI because you're new here... we can't tell who you're responding to when you're replying.  So for example, we don't know what place you're talking about in your question about the selection.  In the future, you may want to either mention the poster or suggestion, or quote the post that you're responding to, so we can answer the question for you!

    Welcome, by the way.

before you hit the bridal building know what you want and know your prices...if you don't you'll get charged the same as if you went to a regular salon.

Try checking out RK Bridal in the city they have a very large selection but I'm not sure what their "off the rack" policy is. I know Kleinfeld does have some "off the rack" stuff they will sell so thats worth a try.

I second group USA because of the time crunch.  You may also want to check out the bridal garden in NYC.  They have sample gowns at a discount and the proceeds go to charity.  There are a couple consignment tores in NYC (MIchaels is one I can think of).  You could get a used designer dress in a rush and at a fraction of the price.

I 2nd RK Bridal, great selection and their prices are not out of control.  I got my Maggie Sottero there for $1300 when Kleinfields wanted $3000 for the same dress.

A few of my friends got their dresses at Bridal Garden in NYC.  They have pre-worn and sample dresses, but it may be worth checking out since anything there you buy off the rack.

I highly recommend Lingerie & Bridal By Lisa on Rte 46 West in Parsippany.  Lisa is a certified fitter and a joy to work with.  She has a beautiful selection of gowns.

By all means, please avoid Tierney's Bridal in Morristown.  The owner, Alyssa Tierney, tried to sell me a pre-owned, pre-worn gown which was wrecked and passing it off as brand new.  She is a crook, the salon is run chaotically, and I don't want any more brides to be victims of Tierney's. I did get all my money back from her.

    Good luck!
