Annullments

Has anyone been in this position??

He is Catholic, I am Protestant, and we attend a Protestant Church together. (He is non practicing Catholic, I have major issues with the Catholic Church, and the church we attend is more us :)  )

We plan on marrying in a Protestant Church...

He brought up that he has to Annull his first marriage to marry me within a church...I was under the impression that was only within the Catholic Church and not Protestant, I grew up Baptist and have never heard of anyone having to annull their marriage...(asked our pastor and he says that is not a requirement, and that is if we marry in a Catholic Church and not ours)

So if someone can clarify this for me that would be great...I know my FI doesn't want to rehash things that happened in the past...and I honestly think his ex would just take it as a chance to cause a big problem...(she cheated, got pg, remarried as soon as the legal waiting period was up...tried to cause rifts between me and him before)

Thanks for Listening!!!

He does not need to annul to remarry in the Protestant Church.  Your Pastor may request/require some sort of counseling before marrying you, but an annulment is not necessary.

It's not required unless he wants to remarry in the Catholic Church.

The others have covered it, but I figured I'd back them up in case you wanted several sources. :)

As a former Catholic - the only thing I would add is that he may want to seek an annulment for his own peace of mind.  If he buys into the belief system he was raised in, he may not feel truly available to enter into a marriage without an annulment.

When you say he doesn't want to rehash everything from his previous marriage, I am sure he knows the annulment will do just that.

Maybe he just never knew that it was only a Catholic thing?  ~Donna

I am currently in the process of annuling my first marriage.  The best advice I can give you is to not listen to everyone's "expert" advice.  Your fiance and you should speak to a priest who is qualified to answer complicated annulment questions.  He could explain the reasoning behind them, as well.

If you are marrying in a Protestant Church, it is not necessary for him to have his Catholic marriage annulled.  Period.  Annulment is required only for remarriage in the Catholic Church.

I too just began the annullment process and agree with amc0558 about seeking advice on whether your FI should go through with it.  I am not your minister or priest but I can at least shed light on it from my perspective for you...
It is a very personal matter and yes, it will rehash a lot of feelings & memories, but that is also part of the healing process.  He may be seeking this (like I am)
    ...then again, maybe not.
I was told by my priest the questionnaire would be about 60 questions.  Well that may be true but there were multiple questions within one bulleted question leading to 11 typed pages worh of responses, and most of my answers were brief.
In St. Louis your application must be submitted with a $200 check and a remaining balance of $450 is to be paid to cover the cost of your church sponsor and other cost related to the process.

This is my first marriage, and his second.  We don't intend to have his first marriage annulled because they were together for 28 years and have three great kids together.  We were both raised Catholic but do not currently attend church.  It is important to me to be married in a church, but I don't know where to start since the Catholics won't have us.

Could anyone recommend a denomination that might resemble Catholicism in its general teachings?  I would love to be married in a gothic-style church if possible.  Any suggestions?
