NWR: Tell me what you think...VERY LONG

So here it goes...

A coworker was on match.com for about 2 months. She never really met anyone off there but went to a mixer a met someone who wasn't on the site which was more of a fling if anything. So then she says some guy send her this message and wants her to deactivate her account so no one else can message her. He is in Malaysia for work he does something with oil. I seen pictures of this guy and he is never by himself. He is always with some kind of athlete or famous person. That was clue number 1 to me that he could be fake. So about 2 days later and he is supposedly in love with her and wants to be together. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE WHEN YOU HAVE NEVER MET IN PERSON!!!! They have NEVER talked on the phone or skyped. Her excuse is that her computer doesn't have a web cam which in the end doesn't matter he knows what you look like how do you know that's really him? A few weeks later they are still emailing back and fourth he has a 10 year old daughter that was supposedly with him on his business trip. I asked how is that possible with her being in school? I was trying to see what she would say just FYI. Then today she says she's in a boarding school!!! I didnt say anything after she said that... She brags about all this money he supposedly has. Here is the icing on the cake around thanksgiving he told her to give him her credit cards information so he can pay off one of her credit cards. Again a complete stranger she's never met!!! She gave him the information and about 3 days later her banks calls about activity on her account that looked suspicious. He asked her how much she made a year and I also think she scanned in her pay stubs at work and sent them to him!!! He wants her to quit her job so she doesn't have to work. He is supposedly coming home to Nashville on Saturday. I feel like there was a guy who sent her a message but everything else is a lie. I just hope everything is the truth or that he is real. I am sure if he proposed she would say yes. I may be 24 but I am not stupid! Sorry for the long rant what do y'all think is she lying?

Sounds like your friend is being completely duped by this guy.  I don't think she's lying to you- I think he's lied to her and she believes everything.  Have you seen Catfish?  This sounds just like that- I don't know how people are that stupid.

Speaking of Catfish.....I have one of my own:

I was 13 when I met a guy in a chat room. We hit it off almost immediately, and he was from England. Had a relationship for almost a year, even mailed each other christmas and birthday gifts. We've stayed friends and finally met in person 3 years ago, we met up in NYC and spent a few days there- then came back here to MN and stayed at my house for a week, even met FI. And of course my female friends completely drooled over him :-P

It was rather symbolic that he and FI got to meet, it was like the torch got handed off since the guy was my first love and really helped me through some tough years.

That's awesome!!!! At least your catfish story ended up being the actual person and not someone pretending to be someone else.

<div>I was going to ask the same thing... this definitely sounds like a Catfish situation. Your friend needs some help to see that this guy (who knows if he is even a guy) is using her. This is a really scary thing.</div>

Okay here's an honest opinion from someone a little younger.  I'm 20, and even I can see that this is dangerous.  It doesn't sound like he's even a real person, and why would anyone in their right mind scan pay stubs to show someone online?  Not even my parents or fiance see anything related to my pay at work.  Nor do either of them know my credit card number.

Obviously if the company called to report suspicious activity, he wasn't just paying off her debt and she should have wised up then.

What's catfish?  I keep hearing about it and I have no clue what it is.

Totally sounds like a scam to me.  I'm with you guys, when I hear about stuff like this I just can't imagine that there are people that stupid out there.

You said she's 40.  I can't help but think that older people on the internet tend to be more trusting than those of us that are younger and grew up around it.  It always seems to me that you mostly hear of older people that fall for the phone scams and such.  Although 40 really isn't that old, relataively speaking.

I still wonder, after all the information and warnings out there, how people can still be so trusting of the internet!

My Aunt was on Match.com and this is the EXACT story someone had for her. She was so excited all of the time and then one day he needed money.  Thank god she was telling me about it and I was like "um no, this is a scam"

Just curious... Did he actually pay it off or did he charge something? Obviously, if he charged something, that should be a major red flag that even SHE can see... If he actually made a payment, then he's even more clever than most, reeling her in first...

After she told me that she gave him the info I asked a few days later if he paid it off and she didn't say yes or no. I am assuming no hence the reason why her bank called.

Oh wow, definitely a scam. What adult would feel comfortable handing over such personal information basically right off the bat like that! I thought of catfish too. She needs to wake up! I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way, but maybe she feels like since she is 40 she feels desperate, so he seems perfect so she is blinded to all the red flags?

Oh man. How sad for her. This is absolutely a scam! You see it on Dateline and such all the time. I was a member of eHarmony and would reply to posts on their fb page. I received messages through fb alllllll the time from these men. They would say how they read my profile and thought we were perfect for each other. My profile is private. Please. Poor thing is going to be heartbroken and broke.
