No Registry? No Space!

Hi!
My fiance and I don't want a registry for our wedding... We've been living together for almost 5 years and have everything we need.  I know a lot of other posters said to register for fun stuff, but we have a pretty small apartment and no room for storage!  We would appreciate cash gifts because we have an ungodly amount of student loan debt... IS there a non tacky/rude way to ask for money, or to make sure we don't end up with big crazy gifts that we have no place to put?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

  • The only acceptable way to ask for a cash gift is by word of mouth - let your friends and family know your wishes, and have them spread the word. Any other way of asking is considered bad etiquette. I would suggest creating a small registry of some sort. This provides an option for guests who would still be more comfortable with getting you an actual gift, but also gives the impression that you'd rather receive cash.

  • A small registry is a good idea. Maybe try and register for newer, nicer versions of things that you already own but could use updating? Sheets are always nice to have and kind of annoying to shell out money for. Or kitchen appliances like new knives or something? Maybe if you have a regular coffee pot register for a Keurig and K-cups....Just don't ask for cash.

  • What about for a destination wedding? I haven't done a registry because it would be a serious hassle to take presents home with us on the plane. Am I right in assuming that our guests won't be bringing any? What is the protocol for this situation?

The protocol for any wedding is to ship a physical gift to the home, a DW is no different.  If your guests being a gift to your DW you should accept them graciously and make no mention of the difficulty of bringing it home.
  • As PP advised: Create a small one with upgrades (new sheets, etc). Decline a shower. Spread by word of mouth that you are saving for X or that you don't need much and people will get the hint.

Also keep in mind, that no matter what, some people will get you a physical gift, and it might not be something from your registry! Some people just prefer to pick something out for your regardless of your need or taste! LOL. Just be appreciative of everything.
