Seeking rustic/ranch/farm/barn *budget friendly venue in SD or so cal! Help!

I am very familiar with the SD venue scene, and it's pricey! We ADORE the Ranch at Bandy Canyon but it's just way more than I would like to spend. I would like to spend less than $1000 on the ceremony and reception site. We want something outdoor, ideally rustic in some way (though I can do that part with decor if need be) to accommodate about 150 guests. We want it to be in the evening/night...so some of the local county parks won't work. I love the Olivenhain Meeting Hall but events have to end at sundown. Is there somewhere that I'm missing that has this feel or is at least outdoors and I could spruce it up with rustic decor? We are open to anywhere in so-cal or probably even up to Napa, but would ideally like to stay local. Oh, and if they allow alcohol of any kind, that would be great.

Thanks!
Esther

  • What month are you getting married? I think it would be awesome to get married at the Keys Creek Lavender Farm. I have no idea about the pricing, but its outdoors with fields of lavender! It's in Valley Center so I imagine it would be cheaper then somewhere downtown. I hadn't heard of it before until my wedding planner mentioned it because we are using a lot of lavender for my wedding.

Some reviews mention wedding on yelp

<div>FI and I basically went on the same search as you about 6 months ago, but we couldn't find anything that worked for us. The Rancho Penasquitos ranch house was the only venue I found that was truly within our budget, but like you mentioned, it's a county park and events can only take place during the day... also, it won't work for you guys anyway because you have 150 guests.</div><div>

  • Have you tried Bates Farm or Hidden Valley Farm?
  • Thanks everyone! I appreciate your help!

Keys Creek Lavendar Farm was one we went to see (I LOVE lavender) but it's in the $5k++ price range, so sadly too high.

Have looked at Bates Nut Farm. Very cute and quaint, and in a lower price range ($2500+ rentals) but less "bang" for the buck in my opinion. I don't think we've seen Hidden Valley Ranch.....!

    Have looked at:
The Ranch at Bandy Canyon in Escondido (LOVE it, way too expensive)
Milagro Farms Vineyard & Winery in Ramona (Pretty great, reasonable, but some drawbacks. Closest thing we have to a reasonably priced, $1500, contender)
Bernardo Winery (A little cluttered feeling, and still priced kind of high for the better location)
Rancho Buena Vista Adobe (Pretty good contender, and reasonable price at $2500 including 100 rentals, but can't say I absolutely loved it for that price)
Leo Carillo Ranch (good price, my mom had her reception there a few years ago, say they're all booked up in 2013)
Quail Haven Farm (too pricey at $4500)
Olivenhain Meeting Hall (best price in town at $150!, but daytime only, no dancing, space limit  internally of 125)
    Brookside Farm (too pricey)
    Condor's Nest Ranch (too pricey)
Rancho Las Lomas (probably too pricey unless on a weekday in March.)
There are others that I have ruled out for other reasons, like the Abbey, Darlington House, etc, but they don't really fit our ideal ranch style.

We are looking at a Saturday in March or April (date is flexible until we find the right venue).
  • Nice work OP! We looked at Hazy Meadow Ranch in Lakeside and Falkner Winery in Temecula. Any site fees they have are included in a per-person price, so without knowing your overall budget, I can't say whether those fall in your price range or not. I also got quotes from Serenity Oaks Ranch in Fallbrook, but they only do Saturday weddings there and we wanted a Friday.

I was looking for the same thing as you and same months! I had same problem with amounts and locations... and dates... I ended just caving and am going to have it at la jolla pres and then la jolla country club-not in budget though. If you don't mind being outside of San Diego theres a place in Riverside that is relly coo-The Mittenl-more trendy than rustic-but has wood vaulted ceilings and reaaally great pricing. I think our estimate was under $14,000 for 200 people with meal/ alc/ and with renting the whole space intsead of just 2 rooms. It's hard to tell in pictures but when you are inside it really is pretty and feels like you're in a barn. It's an old packing house. They also had everything included so you wouldnt have to worry about rentals. It's family owned and if I would definitely had mine there if it wasnt for the location. It's worth a look if you're ever in the area.

  • Have you had any experience with red barn ranch? I can't find any reviews and am having a heck of a time just getting an appointment.
  • My friend had a wedding at Red Barn Ranch and said it was a nightmare and to steer clear!
