Spray Tan?

I got a groupon type of email today for a couple full body spray tanning sessions so I was wondering if anyone has tried it. I stopped tanning last year; the damage was probably already done when I was young and carefree (ahem.. that's the nice way of saying it lol) but hopefully my skin is salvageable.
I am really finding myself uber pale and I would love a little colour. Winters here realy suck all the life out of a person!

Anyhoo, has anyone done the spray tanning? Is it actually as good as they say? Do you look "fake" afterwards?

Re: Spray Tan?

  • I've had it done twice.  Once around 2003 and once last summer.  Both times I LOVED the color, but hated the fade.  The undersides of my arms just looked splotchy.  I suppose if it's something you do on a regular basis though, it wont fade like that.

Just be prepared to feel icky the whole day they do it.  You can't wear any lotions or deodorant before, and you can't take a shower for at least 8 hours.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • I did it once a while ago to see if I wanted to have it done for the wedding because I am naturally this uber pale shade you speak of and can't get a tan from sunlight (just a burn).  I ended up not liking but it was mainly because it was sooo unnatural for me (I have blue eyes and super light blonde hair naturally).  It probably wouldn't look so weird on you because you have darker features.  I also got it done at a place though in FI's hometown (super small) since that's where we will be the week before the wedding and they only had one shade.  So I am curious if a place that had a lighter option would work for me.  I would try it well in advance to see what you think.  One thing I did though when I thought it might work was take full body pictures every day so I could remember how many days in advance to do it based on when it faded to the right color.  One thing I also didn't like was it didn't seem to fade evenly.  Because I didn't touch up, some places were stil the brownish color a month later while others had faded after two weeks.  I'd try it and if you don't like it, check out the gradual tinted lotions that Jergens and I think Vasoline makes.  Those work best for me because since it is very slight there is no unevenness or streaking.  Just takes a few weeks to build up.
  • oooh I don't like that fading issue... it's that unnatural look that worries me.
I'm actually rather fair skinned; I'm naturally blonde with green eyes. Shocking eh? I'm one of those strange women who don't want to be blonde :P
I do tan nicely tho; it's probably my aboriginal roots coming through. I know that I will get darker this summer because we are at the cottage every weekend and out on the boat. I just don't want to do the indoor tanning anymore... it scares me.

  • You wont have to worry about fading or looking orange/unnatural if you apply lotion regularly once the alloted (no shower etc.) time has passed.  Start with a light color and it will darken over the next 6-8 hours so don't be weirded out by that.  Seriously though, lotion, lotion, lotion!

<div>I'd say so.  From what I remember a friend of mine paid almost that for one session.  </div>
  • It looks so darn good! And better coverage than the DIY lotions, I feel. But yeah, they faded sooo fast for me. Probably starting with the DIY self tanner a day or so into it would be a big help. I don't tan, I burn, and just seeing myself all golden was so delicious! I couldn't stop looking at my legs!

  • I'm really glad you asked this because I've also been thinking about spray tan vs. tinted lotions. I'm also really pale and burn instead of tan, plus when I was 15 I had a growth removed from my neck that was pre-cancerous and I was told to limit my sun exposure and stay the hell out of tanning beds.

Quite frankly, I'm scared of spray tans. I'm just so afraid of it looking ridiculous and uneven. Volleygurl - do the tinted lotions really work? I'm not trying to get crazy tan, just a shade or two darker.

  • I LOVE Jergens Natural Glow, but I love the Target generic brand even better. (scent)

My first spray tan was in a booth and the machine sprayed me.  The second one a lady airbrushed on and she could make it as light or as dark as I wanted.

  • To respond to a few things, I found even with applying lotion and I regularly exfoliated before the spray tan, followed the do's and don'ts to a T and still had the fading issue.  Everyone is different tho.  Mama, would you share a pic of what you look like "naturally."  I'm having a hard time picturing it haha.

jessa- yes they do!  It's the only way I can look "less pale" since I'm never actually tan.  I plan to start using daily in May/June (in my brothers wedding in July so figure can get in the habit early).  I've used Jergens and the Vasoline.  Preferred the Vasoline because of the scent but I don't think they make it any more.  Going to try out Target's brand per boots' recommendation though!

  • Make sure you shave and exfoliate before you go for the spray tan.  After a few days I start to look splotchy especially on my forearms like PP said.  If I were you I would try to find someone who uses the airbrush spray tan.  I've heard they do a better job and can do body contouring on areas.  The machines, MysticTan, VersaSpa just go in a up and down motion along your body so if you don't position yourself correctly you could be very uneven.

I like the Target brand because it smells a bit more like baby powder than grandma perfume.  They quality is the same, but you smell less like a grandma.  Also, I use it at night when going to bed so I don't have to smell it all day.

  • Another Jergens lover here! I've been using it for years and I think it gives me a really natural color (I'm a black irish girl--pale skin, dark hair, light eyes and it doesn't look too orange or anything).

And adktd2boots-- I love that you made a Friends reference because I am a Friends fanatic! None of my friends at work really watched it which is sad because I have a Friends reference for everything. That episode is hilarious!

  • I'm a Friends nerd.  I was saying "Pivot, Pivot" the other day when some guys were carrying a furnace up from the basement and kept banging the walls. I reference ALL THE TIME.  No one gets it.  I fall asleep to reruns nightly on Nick at Nite

  • I don't want to blotchy for my boudoir shoot.... not so sexy!

Another question; does it stain your clothes? I know the at home creams can be nasty and I do sweat hard when I train/work out, so I don't want to be oozing orange :P

  • adktd2boots--Hahaha my FI and I reference the pivot thing all the time and I watch it on Nick at Nite every night as well! (Although sometimes it makes me feel old that Friends is on Nick at Nite...I mean, they used to show I Love Lucy and the Brady Bunch!) My work friends laugh at me because I still describe all of my Friends references to them and they're like, "oooook...."

Anyway, sorry to get off topic but mamameech--I bet if it's an actual person doing the airbrushing you'll get more even coverage. And you can ask them to define your abs and other muscles a little extra (or maybe that would just be me....) Give it a try and let us know how it goes, I'm super curious!

  • I used to own the spray tan airbrush machine and loved it until the company I used went out of business.  Its the only way I tan.  Ask if it is a coffee base.  If it is, the benefits are awesome, the coffee will stimulate your skin and look as natural as you can get.  Airbrushing is great because it will come in 3-4 different shades and if you are uneven just call them and most of the time they will just sponge it on.  I was caught in the rain the day I had mine done for a wedding two days later and it worked perfect.

Like PP said, exfoliate a few times prior and make sure you' moisturize the week leading up to it.  Always moisturize a lot after as well.  To offset the fade you can use self tanning lotions.
  • thanks Dirty! Great info!!

I bought the package - 2 sessions for $39. It's the Fabulosa tanning solution by Fabiola, whatever that means lol
It's gonna be strange to have someone that up close and personal in my not so toned areas haha
I'll give it a shot the week before the Boudoir session and if that goes well, I'll do it before my e-pics too. I won't be seeing real sun until June :P

  • I would discourage a spray tan for for two main reasons.  I had one done in high school before prom and:

    1.  My hands turned completely orange.  The rest of me looked great, but you can't tan your palms, so the back's of my hands got sprayed twice and I spent 2 hours scrubbing them with salt and lemon juice.

    2.  While I was in the salon, it began to rain.  I made a mad dash for the car, but my arms still got rain on them.  The tan had apairently not set and I ended up with rain spots!

I've gotten sprayed a couple times. The first time was a custom one where the girl sprayed me and she totally had it even and it looked awesome. I did it afterwork and I went home and slept for the 8 hours and showered in the morning. It did get my pillow a bit brown but I just washed my sheets the next day and it all comes out. It lasted a good amount of time. When it starts coming off in sections (a week later) I just use my sponge and scrub a bit more in specific areas.

I'm planning on being tan for the wedding. It looks great and the spray is the way to go. Nothing harmful like a regular tanning bed. And yes, $39 for 2 custom sprays is a good deal!
