NWR - Holiday Traditions

So this will be FI and my 2nd Christmas together. We are starting to figure out that we have very different traditions. I am use to big family get togethers and he is use to just his parents and brother. We have started to make some compromises on what is really important to us. We have also decide to start a new one of our own. We decided that on Christmas Eve we will go out to dinner then drive around and look at Christmas lights. When we get home we each get to open one present. I am really excited to start our new tradition.

What traditions are you planning on bringing into your marriage with FI and what news ones do you think you want to start?

Re: NWR - Holiday Traditions

  • I have no clue what we're doing for Christmas yet. I know we'll be at both houses and FI is going to mass Christmas Eve with me. I'm gonna try to split it up equally because FI and I are only going home for a week. We're coming back home on the 28th. FMIL told FI it's crappy we won't be here for New Year's Eve but they don't do anything anyways
  • We go to his grandma's every year for Christmas Eve because my family doesn't do anything on Xmas Eve.  I met his family 3 years ago this Christmas Eve.  I think our new tradition will be having our parents and my brother over to our house on Christmas morning for breakfast and presents.  Since we have his dad's side of the family to hit and my mom's side of the family it's easiest.  It all depends on where Christmas Day is held though.
  • We live in the same town as his family and my family, which is great, but makes holidays so crazy. We will get everywhere that we can. Traditions that we will do.... we will ALWAYS go to church Christmas Eve or CHristmas morning, or both. We have been talking about adding in some other traditions.... one we started with Carter this year is Elf on the Shelf... totally love it! We will most likely read the Christmas story from the bible every Christmas Eve as a family as well.

I think the Elf of the Shelf is so cute. I have several family members that do that with their kids.

  • Well, one tradition will defnitely be going to Church on Christmas Eve. I love going to the Holy Communion service that starts out at 11 and gets out on Christmas, but as we start having children, we'll probably go to the earlier one so that they can be in bed when Santa comes.

    Couple traditions:
-I always want to have a little bit of "us" time in the morning before any family comes over. Have a cup of coffee and just enjoy time together.
-Watching "It's a Wonderful Life" on Christmas Eve

    Family Traditions:
    -Definitely elf on a shelf
-Waiting at the top of the stairs on Christmas morning and coming down all together (of course being videoed)
-Big family breakfast - mimosas and bloody mary's for mom and dad
-Watching all our favorite old Chrismtas movies - probably one a nice starting December 1st.

  • Kelsey I love all your family traditions. Especially the one with bloody marys and mimosas for the mom and dad.
  • Thanks! I think mom and dad (being me and FI - then H) will deserve one or two after all our Christmas surprises!
  • We are definitely carrying on my family's tradition of making gingerbread houses from scratch. We make a whole village (four houses and a church) every year, but FI and I will start with just two houses next Christmas.

I also like going to church on Christmas Eve, and opening one present afterwards. Stockings on Christmas morning, too.  From FI's side, we'll probably include some traditional Venezuelan Christmas food, like hallacas.

What is "elf on the shelf?" I've never heard of it!
