Caterer needed - Cheap yet quality

Hey all!

My bride and I are in need of a catering service!  Here's the details:

Location: Hastings, MN (Southeast Metro)
Guest number: 300

We're totally willing to go with the cheapest route, like a pasta bar and salad.  We have a tight budget, so we're looking for under $8 a plate.  However, we want it to be fairly decent quality, and don't want people going away hungry!

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I won't be too much help, but here is something to think about...a smaller town will usually offer much cheaper catering options. We live in the cities but are getting married in my hometown of Faribault, MN with the reception at the Owatonna Country Club. Our plates were quite expensive but our cake from a vendor down there was a steal. I ordered it from Arna Farmer catering out of Faribault. Our cake -- 3 layer: bottle fake and top 2 tiers real with sheet cakes for 200 people (4 different kinds of cake) came to a total of $276. I have no idea how much her food catering costs, but I know she will travel. Something to look into. I have no idea if she would deliver to Hastings or what her prices are for food, but it is worth checking in to :)

My grandparents live in Hastings so we have a lot of big parties there. I know it sounds weird, but we had my dad's 50th birthday party at the Green Mill and they actually had a TON of wedding thank you notes on their hostess stand/sign! I guess they do wedding catering, and I imagine it would be relatively inexpensive compared to a speciality catering company.

I second Bakers Ribs (based in Eden Prairie).  Amazing food, best customer service, and their prices don't hurt.

I'm thinking about using Bakers!  We sampled their menu tonight.  I'd love to hear more about your experience.  What did you order?  Did they come and set up a buffet?  Did you have any servers walking around filling water glass?  I'd love to hear more!  Any complaints or things you'd do differently?

    Thanks,
    maggie
