Food for Thought - Extra Calories Once a Month?

So in devouring all of my lunch and afternoon snacks by 11:35, and realizing that I've been extra hungry the last two days, I decided to waste some time at work doing a bit of googling.

According to nutritionist Mary Hartley:
"A woman’s basal metabolic rate rises by 5 to 10 percent during the week before the onset of menstruation. That would amount to burning 75 to 150 extra calories a day for a woman whose metabolic output measured 1500 calories. The metabolic rate returns to normal, or slightly less than normal, on the first or second day of menstruation. Every woman has a cyclical metabolic rate but the timing of the rise and fall is not identical for every women."

And, an article

I also have to jokingly wonder if the author of the article simply didn't want to piss off a bunch of pms-ing women (300 extra calories?)

Anniversary

  • I have heard of this..and I'm actually totally for it.
It's sounds a little crazy, but regardless.. It's always good to give your bod something different and mix it up.
Even if you're not ovulating (I'm not), it's still good to have a day to hit the 'restart" button.

    Interesting article.
    Thanks for sharing lobs :)
  • Hmm.  I wonder if I was accidentaly going into starvation mode last week and that's why my weight went up and not down.   I wish I knew when to eat more :)

  • That factoid makes great sense, as my appetite and eating are always increased the week leading up to my period, not during it like some people seemingly experience. Interesting article!

  • I always knew my appetite went up the week before my period.  I skip periods now but it would explain why I was being a hungry hungry hippo last week.

  • Haha, er, I felt like that all morning.  It just makes me think that I might be able to time one of my moderate 'cheat days' with that time of the month, and it would do just a smidge less damage.  Considering my cheats these days are only about 200 cals max, it would work out well.  I may just have to indulge in a pesto pasta dinner this week!

  • Wow, no wonder I've been eating like crazy! Mine is due tomorrow. Weird lol
