Family-style catering?

I'm reluctant to give up this idea, even though I've heard it can be more expensive than we can afford!

Have any of you used a caterer that does "family style" dishes placed on the table for people to pass around to each other? Any good deals on caterers in central/western MA, or CT? We'd like to have the reception location somewhere between Boston and CT, and are somewhat flexible about that.  Our budget is $15,000 for 150 guests, AND we want open bar (beer, wine) so a caterer that doesn't provide alcohol/allows us to bring our own/has a great deal on booze would be  helpful too.

    You will have to ask the caterer if they are willing to do that family style.  Several people, including myself really like Seth Mias. You should check him out if you don't have someone yet.
