would you think its weird

If you went to a wedding that there was a cake cutting but the cake wasn't served as desert?

Our venue has a desert built into the menu and we're on a tight budget.  FI and I aren't really cake people but want the traditional cake cutting picture.  I know its silly.

What we were thinking is getting a 6 inch cake to cut on a pretty stand and give out cupcakes as a favor with a mini fork in the box.

What would you think of this?

I think it sounds like a fine idea, especially where you already have dessert figured into your meal.  It seems silly to splurge on a great big cake if you are already going to have another option as dessert.
I've also been to weddings where cake has been given out as a favor.  I don't think it sounds weird at all.

I say it is your wedding and whatever you want to do is perfect.  I wouldn't think it is weird.

I feel the same way, I am going to have a very small cake just so that we can cut a cake with the same knife my parents used when they cut their cake, and than we are going to have cupcakes and other deserts to serve. so, I say go for it!

I think it would be fine.  To be honest, I might be a little let down as a guest because I REALLY love cake, but I wouldn't be offended or anything, especially as long as there were other desserts!

I don't think it's as weird if you're cutting a small cake.  Then it's obvious that you're not planning on serving that to everyone.  At my cousin's wedding they cut a 3-tier cake and didn't serve it and that ticked me off.  But what your describing seems like it would work.

Someone gave the suggestion to have the DJ announce after the cake cutting that in lieu of a traditional wedding cake we have decided to give everyone a wedding cupcake located at the door.  I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I had friends who had a psuedo cake of cup cakes... they were on one of those tier-ed cupcake holder things then at the top they had a very small cake for the cake cutting but offered the cupcakes as dessert.

I wouldn't bother with that; your guests should be intelligent enough to figure out they're not just getting a slice of cake.  To be perfectly honest, I prefer to put favors next to place settings if possible, which will give your guests the convenient option to eat the cupcake for dessert if they want.

Since you're having other dessert options, I don't think there's a need for an announcement.  If people start coming up to you to ask what's going on, then I'd say to go ahead and have the DJ make one.

We're having a family style dinner.  So there will be platters around the centerpieces, when dinner is served.  I'm just worried that there wont be enough space on the table.

That is an option.  FI and I really HATE the look of that.  We've googled non stop trying to find a way to display them that we like.  We'll be having 250-280 guests and it just looks really messy.  Maybe I can get my grandfather to come up with something.  He's a wood working genius!

I went to a wedding where they had a small cake that they cut, then had a cup cake tower that you could just go and choose your own. I thought it was awesome and creative because I had never seen that before. They had all different flavor cup cakes like carrot cake, red velvet and fun flavors.
    I think it's a great idea...I was a big fan and I'm not a big cake person.
