How the question was popped...

I am pretty knew to this board and just wanted to see how everyones hubby or soon to be hubby popped the question (sorry if this was asked recently)! I love hearing proposal stories! :)

I'll start with mine....

It was  our 3 year anniversary and we had (or so I thought) reservations to "our" restaurant in Little Italy.  Most times when going into the city we park the car in Hoboken or Weehawken and take the train.  Well as we were walking to the train (agian so I thought) he popped the question on the waterfront overlooking the city.  My first question was, "Does my family know!!!"  Just as I finished saying that I saw my family and his family approaching us clapping.  They had been watching the whole time videotaping everything from the restaurant behind us.  We then all went out to dinner to celebrate!   Picture of the actual proposal is in my bio! :)

I was actually sleeping when he proposed! His original plan was to slip the ringer on my finger when I was sleeping and see how long it would take for me to notice the ring. I am a really heavy sleeper (it is a big joke between us b/c I can sleep through anything). I ended up waking up while he was trying to slip the ring on my finger. He was actually trying to put the ring on my middle finger and of course it wouldn't fit so I woke up bc he was fumbling with it.

We went away the weekend after Christmas '08. For months, he was telling me we were going to the Poconos for the weekend. So the day after Christmas, I am packing a ridiculous amount of clothes for a weekend vacation. We leave my house and start driving. About 3/4 of the way, I realize we're not going to the Poconos because we are going in a completely different direction, he  surprised me and took me to New Hope b/c i said i always wanted to go to a B&B there.

So we pull up to this place and it's beautiful. However, I'm a little mad because I didn't need to pack half the things I did. So I'm not fond of surprises at this point. So we hang out for a little while and then go to dinner. Dinner wasn't that great and we were sitting at a small table in the corner of a restaurant and it took forever to get food. I'm kind of in a bad mood at this point because I really didn't like my dinner and we were walking in the cold to get to the restaurant from the car.

When we get back to the place, he says "I have one more surprise for you". I'm thinking that I really hate surprises and what is going to happen now. We go into a room that had like a little indoor garden. There were flowers and little waterfalls, and seats in this garden area. When we walked in there was a table set up with chocolate covered strawberries (my favorite), champagne, roses, and candles. So we sat down and had some champagne and I am thinking that this is my surprise. So we are drinking and eating and I actually say to him "Well I thought you were going to pull out a ring or something". So he laughs it off. Five minutes later, he goes into his speech and I have no idea what he really said beacause i was so surprised!

Mish-  havent't seen that since probably last year this time and I absolutely love it!

I was also engaged in Disney.

I went to Disney wth a group of friends while I was in FL to compete in a pageant.  My FI set it all up with my friends.  He dropped me off at the airport, went home and then drove down to FL to meet me, so I had no idea he was even in the state, let alone the park!  My girlfriends took me to the wishing well and as I was lookng for coins to throw in, he came walking up.  I was so surprised!  Here is a pic.

    kasabby, I love that story.

Very simple story for me, but I don't think I would have dealt well with anything too elaborate or public.  And he's an accountant so romantic/surprise is not in his nature :)

He proposed on the beach at night in St. Thomas.  The whole thing probably took about 2 minutes.  But both my sister and I got engaged at that hotel, which is kind of neat.

It was Nov. 10th, and my FI and I were in the basement watching tv, parking wars to be exact.  He asked me to get him an iced pop from upstairs and I finally agreed.  When I came back down, I continued doing my own thing on the computer, which was looking up wedding stuff, (even though we obviously weren't engaged yet lol.)  He started asking me all these questions like what month I wanted to get married, where, what kind of place.  I told him I was shocked he was taking such a interest in all of this considering he never did before.  He finally asked how long it would take to plan and if by the time he could get the ring we'd be able to get married around that time the next year.  I said probably a year or year and half, but we didn't have to get married that very next year.  Next thing I know I looked to my left and he had the ring out and said I'd better get planning.

He had planned for a big elaborate proposal on Christmas but just couldn't hold onto the ring for that long lol.  He had also asked my dad the weekend before so that was good.  FI gets flustered in high pressure situations so I think as much as he would have tried, a big thing probably would have gotten messed up.  We're not very fancy people, so just us two at home was perfect for me :)

FI is Jewish, and had found out that he was still eligible for Birthright Israel. He'd never been off of North America, and I told him he should go. (Backstory: I studied abroad about 6 months after we got together, plus having to finish up college... let's just say I don't do separation from him well.) So, he joined a group to go in January of '08. He cooked up extra meals for me (I, um, can't boil water), we made plans for me to stay at my mom's, have some friends over.. keep me from getting mopey while he was gone for about 2 weeks.

Of course, I get completely paranoid while he's gone. I start thinking, "he's going to come home and tell me he can't marry me if I don't convert... he's going to want some Jewish girl, OMG, OMG, OMG." Meanwhile, several of our mutual friends are talking with me and laughing at me. They keep saying, "Maybe he has a plan and is just sowing his wild oats. Don't worry about it." His sister keeps saying "I know something you don't know!"  In other words, I'm a clueless wreck.

So, he comes home, I pick him up at the airport, and I pretty much attack him as he comes out of the terminal. Like, throw myself at him and glare at all the (college age) girls on the trip. (Some of whom were next to him when I was on the phone with him, and would go, "IS THAT YOUR GIRLFRIEND? SHE SOUNDS CUTE!" into the phone... they knew, too, for later reference.)

We get home, he starts showing me all the gifts he bought while in Israel, while sitting on our couch. Shabbas candles for his grandmother, shawls for his sister and me, chocolate just for me, pictures of Jeruselem for our parents, etc. He stops, says, "I have one more thing, I'll be right back." He disappears into our bedroom, rummages around in his bedside table, and comes back with something in the pocket of his hoodie. He stands in front of me, and says, ""I want to give you something, so that if I have to go away again, you'll know I'm YOURS." And he pulls out a red velvet box as he sits down next to me.

He opens it up, and I'm all, "OMG, that's beautiful, it's so gor- WAIT! ...Is that what I THINK IT IS???" He doesn't say a word, just pulls off my promise ring and starts to put this ring on. I switch to, "YES! YES! I LOVE YOU YES!"

Notice he hasn't said a dang word about MARRIAGE, yet. He says, "I love you, too," all teary-eyed. At which point, I go, "YES! Wait, you really are...?" And he goes, "Yes." So, I say, "SO ASK ME!" ...And he asks me, really quietly. Clearly, I said yes.

Turns out, he bought the ring, with his mother's input, IN NOVEMBER, when I was in a bunch of shows and wasn't paying attention. He picked up the ring IN DECEMBER, hoped to high heaven I wouldn't hug him when he got home that day, and hid it in his bedside table. So, the entire time I'm freaking out while he was in Israel, I could have snooped in his bedside table and been perfectly fine. ...And he told all our friends he had the ring, and not one of them spilled the damn beans.

So, considering he proposed on the couch, jet-lagged, we've got a bit of a story.

He did it during the first really big snow fall of the season.  We were sitting outside with hot chocolate and he kept telling me to look at this and that.  I would briefly look and just say "oh yeah that's nice".  He kept fidgeting and quite frankly making me a bit crazy.  He told me his pants were getting wet and that he had to roll them up.  While he was down on one knee rolling up his pants he nonchalantly said "so what do you think".  I replied "about what".  Then he pulled out the ring and popped the question and all the I love yous and crying began.  I love that he did it in the snow, just the two of us.

We got engaged on November 4, 2009. I had known for a while that it was going to happen, I just didn't know when. FI had off from work that day and I had some work to do in the house early in the day. Earlier in the week he mentioned that he wanted to go hiking in PA if it was nice. So that morning I got up and did what I had to do and got ready to go hiking. I wasn't feeling 100% that day, but I still wanted to go. When he got to my house he said he wanted to go to the Appalachian trail. So we drove to the PA side along the Delaware Water Gap. It was a gorgeous day, and we started our venture near a water fall. It was a nice walk, just the two of us. I had my camera and was taking pictures along the way. As we start approaching the top of the mountain he says to me "Us against the world baby." Which has always been one of our sayings, so of course I start to laugh about it. Then he proceeds to tell me "Remember last week when you asked me when you were getting your ring, and I said Wednesday? Well, today is Wednesday." And he proceeds to get down on one knee and open the ring box...UPSIDEDOWN!!!! LOL! I of course point that out because I really couldn't see the ring. So he closes the box and opens it again the correct way. He proceeds to tell me "I've loved you from the beginning. You are my world, my love, my everything. Will you marry me?"

Of course I said yes....lol! So after our lovely moment on top of the world we celebrated that evening at The Black Forest Inn in Stanhope.

It was 3 days before my birthday, and the first warm Spring weekend (3.20.10).  FI and I went into the City, and walked around Central Park.  All day I was making jokes with him because he was carrying a backpack, but kept reiterating to me that my birthday present was inside.  As we walked around the park we came to Tutle Pond and across was Belevedere Castle...FI asked me if I wanted my Birthday present - and of course I said yes...he gave me a long box that was wrapped (I'm thinking it's a bracelet - which it was!).  After I had finished unwrapping the box, I turned to FI, and to my surprise, he was on his knee with a ring!  After the proposal it was drinks and dinner in Little Italy!

He bought the ring on a Friday and had a plan to pop the question during the weekend. We both ride dirtbikes on the weekends so he had planned on placing the ring under a rock and then when we were throwing rocks off the track (something thats done each time) he would ask me to get that specific one.

Fridays are usually our date night, we have dinner and watch either a movie or something we DVR. I happened to make his favorite dinner and throughout the whole meal he kept staring at me. I didn't really think anything of it because he's really cheesy at times and does that and tells me I'm beautiful or something. In reality he was realizing he coudn't wait to ask.

After dinner he usually runs to the livingroom, turns the TV on, and waits for me to be done cleaning up in the kitchen (he tries to help cleaning but I'm such a clean freak that I redo what he thinks he did). When I started walking towards the livingroom I noticed him just standing there looking around and kind of pacing.

I guess he heard me approaching cause he turned around, looked at me reaaallly oddly and got down on 1 knee. I thought he was kidding around! (For my 20th birthday- 4 yrs ago - he got down on one knee and gave me a ring-pop and swore he was going to marry me one day)
Once he took out the little black box and opened it up and something was sparkling in it I started to cry. He then started to cry, somehow mumbled "will you mary me" and we started hugging and kissing...while crying.

When we calmed down he asked "wait....did you even say yes?" haha.
It wasn't something planned but it was perfect none the less.

another disney proposal here! but, just a little more low key than the others...

so, i guess it all started in april of 09...we were at a yankee game on his birthday, and he said "if a-rod hits a home run, we'll get married"....he did not hit a home run that night, so then it turned into  if we're watching the game on tv together and he hits a homerun, or if we're on the phone watching together and he hits a grand slam.....so he was over one night and we were watching the game and arod hit a home run, but he claims i wasn't looking so it didn't count....plus he said "what kind of propsal story is that"
so then fast foward to sept 09 and we're going to disney for a week....the first night we're watching the fireworks, and i thought to myself "how awesome if he proposed now" and he didn't.....then it comes to one of the days we were in universal, and it was pouring rain, and we noticed that the movie theater was showing all the indiana jones movies....at that time the last crusade was showing (his fave) so we went in to watch it, another one was showing next, but we had reservations at the california grill, he wanted to stay for another movie, and i wanted to go shower and make sure we weren't late....so we got there earlyish to go watch the fireworks out overlook thing, so we're standing there, amongst a crowd of people, watching the fireworks over the magic kingdom....and again, i think "how awesome if he were to propose now..." and then when they were over i thought "ohwell, he'll do it when he's ready...and if he's not ready now, that's ok"..

so there was some drunk chick out there with us, after everyone left....and we thought we'd just hang out there and wait for our table to be ready...the other chick finally leaves....and we were talking about whatever, and he asked me if i made a wish (the fireworks theme is wishes) and i said i did, but if i told him it wouldn't come true....and we stood there a bit longer, and then he said, oh, i think our table is ready, and i said oh, to which he said, oh not yet, "but, i do have this" and he takes the ring out of his inside pocket and gets down on one knee...meanwhile, as he tells the story, i jumped so high he thought i was going to jump off the ledge....but my hands flew to my face and i was crying and thinking "omgomgomgomgomg" and, i could not tell you for the life of me what he said....and i remember thinking "did he ask yet? when do i say yes?" and i think i said "of course!" when he asked? and we hugged and kissed and said i love you, and a few minutes later he said "ok, so can i put the ring on you now?"
i had NO clue! he was so calm and collected the whole day...and he was freaking out that i would feel the ring in his jacket so he took it out of the box, he thought i'd see it in his shoe when he opened his suitcase....
and apparently he had the ring that night we were watching the yankee game at my folks and arod hit the home run....it was in his car for months he claims...

My Proposal was an accident.  When FI had gotten my ring he took a picture of it to send to his sister.  Well one night when we were out, he went to take a picture of me but it came out all white so he deleted it.  I guess the ring was the next picture in his album because the ring popped up on the screen.  He was looking for the right time to propose but I guess the "Wedding Gods" thought he was taking too long.  He asked me to marry him on the dance floor of a local bar while there to see our favorite reggae band.  He thought he ruined it, I of course thought it was perfect.  A lot of our relationship has been a "Happy Accident" so I thought the proposal was rather fitting.

We got engaged at dusk, on the pier/dock at Gropps lake in Hamilton on Sept. 25th, 2009.  I had no clue it was coming...I just thought he brought me there to apologize for the 2 weeks worth of fighting that we had done. Gropps lake has sentimental value as he brought me there to tell me "i love you" for the first time in July of 2003

Last August FI and I went to Newport, RI for our 6-year dating anniversary.  On the first day we were there, we went to visit the mansions they have there along the water.  It was a gorgeous day, sunny and perfectly clear, and we were having a great time.  We saved the most famous mansion, the Breakers, for last, and by the time we were done touring the mansion they were getting ready to close for the day.

FI and I went to the backyard of the Breakers, which faces the water.  We were totally alone, and I was running around like a little kid, doing cartwheels on the lawn, while FI was following me with the video camera and begging me to come over by him.  Finally I did, and he put the video camera down facing us and told me that he wanted a video of us since we had been taking videos of the mansions all day but there was none of us.

I knew then that he was going to propose.  With the video camera pointing at us and how nervous he suddenly got, it was pretty obvious (plus I knew the proposal was coming, just didn't know when).  So we have a very cute video of him proposing at a mansion right on the water at sunset...love it! And we enjoyed the rest of our vacation with our little secret -- didn't tell any family or friends til we got home.
