Vendor Reviews

I know it's taken me WAY too long to do this, but there you go. :)

Our overall plan was to have a wedding that made use of local & eco-friendly vendors and products as much as possible. We found that in all of the vendors below and were just really impressed with every single person we worked with in the planning and execution. I wish there was some letter before “A” to give to some of these vendors.

One thing I learned is that, if you do your research and really have a solid idea of what you want, you don’t have to spend a lot of time with a vendor to know if they’re “right” or not. We had a looooong engagement, which allowed me a lot of time to come up with a theme and let my ideas crystallize. Most of these vendors were booked after just a couple of emails or one meeting. I know that doesn’t work for everyone, but it worked for us.

Day Of Coordinator – We had a Day Of Coordinator who I was originally going to give an A- to, but we had some post-wedding conflict with her. I’ve decided to simply not review this service at all, as I’m very torn about what to do. The experience of finding a DOC was difficult, which I’m sure fed into this. I was never as “gut feeling” satisfied with this process as I was with the rest of the vendors.

Venue Winfrey Point, White Rock Lake A - This is a beautiful location with a lot of character, and it books up EARLY, but there’s a reason you get it for so little cash. It is 100% DIY. We had originally considered the arboretum and, in retrospect, we might have been able to do it there for the same or possibly even a little less. But we wouldn’t have had as much flexibility with décor or outside vendors. It’s something to consider. Also, you will NOT want to use their chairs, so just go ahead and forget they exist. J

Caterer – www.twosisterscatering.com" target="_blank">Two Sisters Catering
 – A+ - We really loved this team. We wanted a vegetarian, and eco-friendly meal and they did it with aplomb. They were UBER professional and the food was AMAZING.  They may be a little out of budget for some couples, but we were able to swing it since we kept the guest count very low. If you can afford them, it’s worth every penny. They use as much local and organic food as they can find, and they handle all of your rentals through Ducky Bob’s, for no up charge. The waitstaff was great, and both Monica & Stephanie were wonderful to work with.

Florist – www.bowsandarrowsdeluxe.com" target="_blank">Bows & Arrows Deluxe
 – A++ - I can’t say enough good things about Alicia & Adam Rico. We found them when were looking for milk glass to use and ended up going with them as our florist because of how awesome they were. Alicia can work with any aesthetic, but she REALLY fit my vintagey, DIY feel. They do their best to use local, in season flowers, and that helps keep the cost down where possible. The flowers were so lush and gorgeous that our guests were stealing them by the end of the night!

Photographerwww.whitneyleephotography.com/" target="_blank">Whitney Lee Photography
– A++ - Whitney and her team are an absolute DREAM to work with. She’s based in Austin, so you will have to pay a small travel fee for a DFW wedding, but it’s well worth it. Her work speaks for itself, but after meeting with her, I just knew she would be perfect. She’s actually come back and thanked US for “letting her” be a part of our day! The ONLY negative is that, because she’s so popular, it took a little longer than I’d expected to get our photos back. But seriously, that’s NOT a real negative – I was just antsy, like any bride I think.
J

DJJohnny Robinson – A++ - Johnny is by far, the sweetest, most talented guy I’ve ever met. He was Austin based, too (recommended by Whitney Lee), but didn’t charge any extra for the travel. We emailed back and forth at first, and then had several phone calls. I put together a list of “Must Play” songs and he used that to create a whole playlist. It sounded like we had put our own Ipods on the turntable – that’s how good he was at interpreting our tastes from a sampling of about 20 songs. And, honestly, he’s just the nicest person you could meet. His prices are VERY reasonable and I think you can fit him into almost any budget. He did our outdoor service, and indoor reception, including wireless mics, full sound set up, and lights, for $800.  jrobinson242@gmail.com

Bakerywww.societybakery.com/" target="_blank">Society Bakery – A+ - I worked with Becky Collazos at the bakery and she was awesome. When you go for your “tasting”, you get sent home with a dozen full-sized cupcakes! They were able to perfectly execute what I wanted and were great to work with. Their specialty is cupcakes, so if you’re leaning towards that, DEFINITELY check them out. J

Airbrush Makeup
www.something-you.com/" target="_blank">Shannon Caldwell, Something You Makeup – A+++ - Shannon came through kind of last minute when I was freaking out about my original makeup artist. She does airbrush makeup and hair. I only technically used her for makeup. I say this because I have never seen someone go so far above and beyond. Not only did she do amazing full makeup on me, and foundation on one of my attendants, but she did the flower girl’s hair, helped with my veil, got me dressed, and was just everywhere at once and available to help with anything that came up. She showed up 4 hours before we were scheduled to leave and stayed until we had done all of our pre-wedding photos and were off in the limo. If you are wondering whether airbrush is worth it, I say YES. If it’s in your budget, the quality is great, and Shannon is the person to talk to!

HairAdriana Aragon  A++ - Adriana has been doing my hair at the Red Door Spa & Salon on Northwest Highway for several years now. It’s hard to review someone you know so well, but she did amazing work. My hair looked absolutely perfect and held up wonderfully throughout the entire day. She did my hair and the bridesmaids hair for a very reasonable price and was just her adorable, charming self through the whole process.

Transportation www.aneleganttouchlimo.com/" target="_blank">An Elegant Touch Limousine – A++ - This is a family owned company and you get that personal touch with them. The drivers were super sweet and patient, even pulling off the road and talking my godmother through a sketchy part of town when she lost us on the highway. I’ve never had a limo service before, but these guys were great. They literally roll out the red carpet for you! I loved the experience and would definitely use them again.

Etsy Craftspersons
: I’m a big supporter of handmade crafts and, in keeping with my Vintage/DIY aesthetic, I found my entire ensemble and a lot of our other smaller items on this fabulous site.

Dress – Shayne Jelavic -www.etsy.com/shop/MaisyBrownReproRetro" target="_blank">Maisy Brown Repro Retro – A+ - This was probably the part of the wedding planning where I was most likely to be called “crazy”. I couldn’t find anything I really loved at the major stores, so I started looking at Etsy.com for inspiration. I found a really awesome design that I loved, but wanted to tweak and started talking to Shayne about it. She worked with me via email to determine if she could do it, and then asked for a small down payment to start the official design process. After I’d paid the deposit, I noticed that she was located in AUSTRALIA! I knew I was dealing with someone non-local, but the exact location has slipped past me somehow! The only real problem this caused was that there was always a lag in our communication, due to the time difference. Other than that, she was fabulous. I got a custom designed gown, made to my exact measurements, for less than any other gown I saw in the stores.

Dress Alterations - Becky Fowler - A++ - Does she really need a review by now? Wink

Petticoatwww.etsy.com/shop/sewdelightful4U" target="_blank">Sew Delightful 4 U – A+ - I went looking for a crinoline with a colored edge online and found plenty of sites that sold them (square-dancing), but they were all pretty expensive and were going to take 6-8 weeks to deliver. I was fine with the price, but not with the timing. So I went to Etsy and used the Alchemy feature for the first time. This vendor came back with exactly what I wanted, at almost HALF of my asking price. The petticoat was PERFECT in color, size & length. I was absolutely amazed that I didn’t have to get it shortened at all to match the hem of my dress.

Awesome Yellow Shoeswww.etsy.com/shop/vintagepalace" target="_blank">Vintage Palace – I don’t really have a grade for this, since I just purchased them directly, but I got a lot of compliments on my shoes, so I wanted to share the source.

Jewelrywww.etsy.com/shop/anneshirleycreates" target="_blank">Anne Shirley Creates – A+ - I love pearls, but wanted something a little unusual, and with some color. I found the perfect necklace on Anne’s site and asked her to create a matching bracelet and earrings. The prices were great and she was able to work them up and send me a photo within just a couple of days.

Headband & Veil
www.etsy.com/shop/bethanylorelle" target="_blank">Bethany Lorelle – A – Bethany has a great selection of more traditional and less traditional bridal head-gear. I loved the way she used color and she was very easy to work with. I loved one of her designs as-is, but wanted to make sure it fit my head just right. She had no problem doing a custom order to make sure it was the right size.

Clutch Pursewww.etsy.com/shop/AMSIE" target="_blank">Amsie – B+ - This was a last minute purchase. I’d been looking for a yellow clutch and couldn’t find anything that was just right. I stumbled onto this one just a couple of weeks before the wedding and ordered it immediately. It was absolutely perfect. The only reason I give it a B+ is that the stitching on the rosette started to come loose after the wedding. It looked great on the day, though, which is what really matters, and didn’t break the bank.

Bridesmaid’s Hair Combs
www.etsy.com/shop/SpiderellaStudio" target="_blank">Spiderella Studios – A+ - Since I only had 2 bridesmaids, I wanted something really unique for them. Alison worked with me to create these hair combs and they were absolutely adorable. It took a long time to get them right, but she was really patient and attentive to my requests. The only surprise when they arrived was that they were smaller than I’d thought. She had given me a measurement, but it just didn’t look the same in my head – that’s my fault though. They still looked awesome and I would recommend her work to anyone looking for something unique for their wedding or any other occasion.

Bridesmaid’s Pearl Necklaces
www.etsy.com/shop/dutchpearl" target="_blank">Dutch Pearl – A+ - These necklaces were absolutely gorgeous. The only “complaint” I have is that I wasn’t able to get matching earrings from her. They’re hand-knotted and the colors are SO rich they almost seem fake. But they’re definitely not!

Guestbook Poster
www.etsy.com/shop/spreadthelove" target="_blank">Spread The Love – A+ - I wanted something different from the usual guestbook and when I saw this poster, I knew it was the right one. They will customize the colors for you to match your theme. It was absolutely perfect and is a great keepsake for our home.

Cake Topper
www.etsy.com/shop/Perch52" target="_blank">Perch 52 – A – It’s hard to give a better grade to this simply because I bought it as-is. So, I can’t say anything about how the vendor really is to work with. But we’ve gotten a lot of compliments on it. I was looking for something that wasn’t gender specific, and even a lot of the non-human toppers still have something indicating one is the boy and one is the girl. This was perfect, and not as expensive as some of the others I’d looked at.

Wildflower Favors
www.etsy.com/shop/naturefavors" target="_blank">Nature Favors – A – Similar to the cake topper, I bought these as-is, with just the common customizations that they offered. But the pricing was good, the product was exactly as pictured & described and they were easy to work with. The only thing I didn’t love was the color of ribbon that came with the boxes. I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be the right color, but I had a lot of ribbon left over from a DIY project and it wasn’t any extra work to just use my own.

Invitations & Programs
www.etsy.com/shop/tuccipaperco" target="_blank">Tucci Paper Co – A+ - The invitations were the first big project, and working with Wenda was really great. I found a design of hers that I loved back when our wedding was being planned for a different time of year and completely different color scheme. When things changed, I went back to her and asked about a custom design. She only charged a small design fee on top of her regular prices. I gave her a little info about what I was thinking and she put together a great stationery suite. I would most definitely recommend her work to anyone.

yah, we definitely couldn't have used them if it had been a big wedding. if you have the option to keep it small, it lets you spend more per person than you would otherwise. there are pros and cons to big vs small, but small definitely worked for us. :)

Oh, yeah, I tried explaining that idea to my mother, but she didn't go for it...

It's ok, though, I really liked my caterer's tasting! And we're pretty much getting what we would want, big guest list and all. We're just having to do less in other areas. Like flowers.
