My thyroid is trying to sabotage my wedding dress!

...okay, the brownie my coworker brought me yesterday was my fault. But I do have hypothyroidism and a seriously hard time losing any weight. I noticed my bras were not fitting very well so I tried on my dress again....

...it doesnt FIT!!!

I need to lose 1-2 inches off my bust, and honestly anything else that I can lose would be awesome. I am about 50lbs over the weight I would like to be, but I'd like to lose, realistically 10-20lbs by my wedding on October 6, 2012.

Does anyone know any extreme, but not dangerous, diets? Something with enough substance that I can continue working my high-stress job and begin some workouts.

I've been all over the map with diets and exercise and because of my thyroid I don't really see much in the way of results....that is why I need something rather extreme now if I want to lose that much.

Thanks!

  • I don't think anything extreme will benefit you.  Exercise and eat healthy.  Lots of fruit and veggies and lean protein.  Try to cut back on the carbs without cutting them out completely.

It's a long story but I'll try to shorten it: I am on meds, but the way thyroid medication works you cant start at your full dose, if you go too high too fast your heart races and you get panic attacks. That was not fun.

Anyway, I started with a natural thyroid medication but I was getting paranoia, mood swings, and severe depression when I was on it. Then I switched to a synthetic thyroid medication, but it caused extreme joint pain. I dropped twenty pounds on it but the joint pain was so unbearable I could barely walk. I went back to the natural medication but gained the weight back on it...it seems to help my energy but not my metabolism. I decided after a year of slow but steady dosage adjustments to try a different form of synthetic because my doctor and I are both puzzled as to why I am not dropping weight on the natural. The synthetic immediately started causing pain again so after a week I was back on the natural but my feet still hurt. The synthetic causes a pain that lasts months after I'm off it because it lingers in my body.

It's a very complicated issue and I am working closely with my doctor. But meanwhile my wedding is approaching....

I think talking to your doctor would be a good idea.  You could talk to him about your frustrations and maybe he could help.  I know there are some medications that make it so that you feel full sooner.

I don't know if this would be considered extreme but my mom lost 50lbs on atkins.

I'm trying to lose weight too (in your same boat 50lbs ow) and I am on day 3 of just trying to stay at 1200 cal, drink water when I am hungry between meals, I cut out all pop and sugary drinks and am trying to slowly but surely add exercise.  I am doing simple things to help make it easier like switching to ground turkey instead of ground beef, putting half our meal away before sitting down to eat (helps with portions, my downfall) and I drink 8-12 oz of water 10-15 min before meals.  If I need something sweet I have been eating a khashi cookie, but counting the calories or eating fresh fruit.

Hope this helps and I hope you reach your goals! I know its hard and it sucks but I just keep telling myself that in 2 months I can either be really excited or regret the choices I made today... I really want to be excited!
  • I know several women that claim a thyroid issue when they don't have anything wrong, solely because it's easier to blame something else and get a pill.

If you really have a thyroid problem, confirmed by a doctor, then he should have put you on a med that will put it in check, which will allow you to lose weight just like anyone else if you are dedicated and responsible.

After that, you can't blame your thyroid anymore, because the med has balanced you out. it's time to own your own eating and exercise habits and start making changes.

</div><div>Also, </div><div>1. "extreme" but "not dangerous"... That's almost oxymoronic. Sorry, but if there was such a thing, everyone would be skinny right now. </div><div>
</div><div>2. Maybe the reason you aren't losing any weight is because you have been "all over the map with diets" . It's a reason "diets" are called yo-yo diets. That's exactly what they will do to you if you are just jumping from one to the next and not taking the time and effort to adjust slowly. </div><div>
</div><div>3. You do not need anything "rather extreme". No one does. You need to eat well and exercise your butt off so that you lose weight the healthful and long-lasting way. </div><div>
    </div><div>
    </div>
  • I'm with firsttimers. Extreme diets are not the answer. I'm sure that it isn't helping your thyroid when you jump from one extreme diet to the next - your body doesn't know what to do with itself!

I would really just start making yourself healthy from the inside out - at least if you're eating healthy you and not decreasing weight (which I'm sure would happen eventually, maybe slowly, but it would happen) you know that you're doing everything you can to stay healthy (cholesterol, blood pressure, etc.). Try just eating healthy and taking whichever medication your doctor has prescribed, and try that for at least 5 weeks. If after 5 weeks you've seen no change, then talk to your doctor again.

Don't fall into the vicious cycle of "It's not my fault, it's my thyroid. Even if I were eating fruit instead of this cheeseburger I would gain weight, so I might as well enjoy myself." It's an easy mindset to get into, and it only results in worsening your health.

I am sending you positive vibes and wish you lots of willpower on your weight loss journey!

  • hah yeah Sarah, I have this aquaintance that is about 27. She was like "yeah my dr didn't want to give my thyroid meds because he said it's all fine but I finally convinced him because I have been eating the exact same way since high school and have gained 20 pounds since then"

    uhhh..
    Dude..
If I ate like I did in high school.. I would gain 20 x a million pounds.
What an idiot.. Seriously? It's called growing up and her metabolism slowing down -__- A 27 year old woman cannnot eat like a 15 year old boy lol.
  • Yes my thyroid levels are confirmed, I've been getting blood tests every six weeks for a year and a half and tried several different medications. Like I said earlier, I lost a ton of weight on the synthetic brand (like a normal person with my diet and exercise would) but because of the joint pain side effect it wasnt worth it so I switched to the natural medication...it just doesnt seem to help my metabolism. Thyroid medication is not a miracle weight-loss drug. It works great for some but it doesnt work the same way for everyone...every body is different.

You are absolutely right about not getting in the mind-set of it not mattering what I eat because of my thyroid. I do count calories and exercise...I probably could do more of it. It just seems like I work out to not GAIN. If I stop my regimen I'll pile on a couple pounds...but if I work really hard I maintain my weight. See what I mean?

I think I wasnt clear enough about the diets I've tried. I don't switch off and on quickly or without consideration. I stay on it for months to truly test it out. I went gluten free and weighed my food and resticted certain foods for six months!

Before my thyroid condition started I was 110lbs, and very active! I love doing stuff and I love eating healthy, it's just difficult now to be as active as I want to be because my thyroid makes me so tired. Eventually that will go away when my medication is finally up to the full amount.

In addition to whatever diet I end up doing for the wedding....I need to stick to something sustainable and healthy for the long run and most of all reduce sugar intake. I've been reading about sugar and it affects us so much even on a mental and emotional level.

Omg! Does the doctor actually give them medication for something they dont have??? I had to do a whole panel of blood tests. I can't imagine getting a medication for a disease you dont have.

  • Maybe its time to find a new doctor that can find a medication that works! I have hypothyroidism as well, but you can't just blame that for your weight issues. Yes, gaining weight is a symptom of your thyroid levels being low, but once your levels are corrected, that isn't some miracle that is going to make the weight come off. Correct thyroid levels should help stop the weight gain, that is all. You will have to get your butt in gear to make a difference. Zumba and eating 1200 - 1500 calories a day worked well for me!

You sound like me. I have been all over the place with my thyroid as well. they finally have me on Synthyroid and Cytomel (both brand names) but my blood pressure went through the roof. Ugh its so fustrating. When my dosages are off it isnt difficult for my weight to fluctuate greatly and me get puffy or drop tons of weight. I also developed insulin resistance from the weight gain so this maybe something to research on your own about diabetes and what the weight fluctuations do to you. I also have the joint pain, but I assumed mine was from the weight fluctuations and started taking a joint supplement that helped a ton.

I am doing Insanity and following the diet. I had to cut out most carbs and if I do have carbs I eat complex carbs. Also, my doctor recommended a "diabetic type" diet.

I started at 117 then puffed up to 230+. Finally on my way back down. Try myfitnesspal too to track your diet. Drink lots of water. And take a good vitamin. Good luck.

  • I don't have that problem, but have been excercizing and eating a well balanced diet for 6 months to only see a few total pounds lost. What I am seeing, however, is a change in my shape and tone. Don't worry about the pounds, just the fit.

Go for brisk walks on lunch and after dinner. Sure, other excercises are more calorie efficient, but this is easy enough to fit into your sechedule without having to shower after every venture. When you do get to the gym, start running. Start out small, like 1-2 minutes, and walk until you catch your breath and slow your heart back down. I started with that about 1.5 months ago and run for 4-5 mins with a 2-3 break in between each set. Also, lift weights to gain muscle mass. Muscle is denser than fat, so you may still stay the same on the scale but drop inches.

The more you excercise and the more muscle you have, the greater your metabolism boost and resting calorie burning will be. Good luck! Drink lots of water, little salt, and eat REAL foods! Like the ones you find outside. Good luck!

  • We do have a lot in common! I wonder if your joint pain is related to the meds too? Mine was so bad I had difficulty walking for months, definitely the most miserable time of my life. I felt like I was 80 years old. I do use my fitness pal and I LOVE it, what a great tool.

  • You're so right about thyroid meds not working the same for everyone. I take levothyroxine (generic of synthroid), but if i forget to take it ONCE, i swear I feel I've never slept in my entire life.
You may already be doing this, but make sure you take thyroid medicine like clockwork, before eating, with plenty of water. I used to roll my eyes at that but my doctor explained that not following that rule can ruin how the medicine is absorbed. (:

  • Thank you everyone for the input and support. So I tried a Paleolithic diet the last couple days today is day three it's basically hunter/gatherer style. I figured if ancient civilizations survived on it, so can I. There is actually a ton of nutrients, proteins, and starches in vegetables. I am not eating ANY carbs. Not even fruit. Day one I had sugar withdrawal and a horrible headache, day two I was freaking out about how weak and hungry I felt, today I am feeling pretty good! Dropped four pounds already and i have been lifting weights in the morning and walking at night. The trick is to eat a TON of vegetables, and very frequently. Nine cups of veggies a day is my goal but I'm not there yet...that's a lot!

    Hi,
I'm not quite in the same boat, though I do have very mild hypothyroidism on top of Crohn's. I need to be extremely vigilant about my diet for both -- the hard part is that Crohn's feels best off of fruits and veggies, but hypo feels best on fruits and veggies. I am on Levoxyl. Make sure that whatever medicine your doctor puts you on is NOT generic. Thyroid medicines are the one exception to the rule when it comes to get-generic-over-name. Generic thyroid drugs have a bunch of extra fillers. I was on them for a month without realizing and I gained a couple of pounds and was super bloated.

I get frustrated with my thyroid, because although I'm mostly happy where I'm at (I wear a size 6 or 4), I still would love to lose another inch here or there. I fight for EVERY INCH lost and rejoice at even maintenance. I do not weigh myself.

I think diet is honestly 85% of the battle, though the most important 15% in the 100% is exercise. I know that sounds confusing. I'm a fitness fiend, and I make it a serious point to sweat every day. Train with more weights than you think you need. I was cardio crazy until I upped my weights (not pound-wise, but frequency) and getting them in 3 x a week as opposed to 2 has made all the difference.

Here's an average day of food for me:

    1. 4 frozen strawberries, 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries, 2 handfuls spinach, water --> green frozen smoothie
enjoyed (seriously, I love it) with 1/3 cup of cinnamon oats mixed with 1 T all natural peanut butter (the brand of oats is called KIND, it's semi granola-y but has flax, quinoa, and more in there)

    2. As of late, I've been enjoying a Mediterranean-style lunch: veggies with hummus, 1 oz of cheese, a couple of olives, tomatoes. I just read the book French Women Don't Get Fat which makes me feel that I'm justified here.

    3. 1-2 snacks per day, including:
    Pink Lady apple
    almonds
    Greek yogurt
    cheese
spoonful of PB, with or w/o an apple

    4. Dinner: grilled chicken breast or seafood (salmon, scallops, swordfish, lobster, most frequently); plus 1-2 sides. most common accompaniments:
    mushrooms
    black bean mashed
cannelini bean, garlic, spinach, and sundried tomato or mushroom side
salad (ALWAYS make your own dressing), often with quinoa
    quinoa

  • I just got diagnosed with hypothyroidism in October of last year and have been on Armour thyroid (bioidentical) and have been prescribed complete hormone replacement therapy and it hasn't helped me lose weight at all.  I am on Progesterone and Testosterone too.  The only difference I see is whiskers coming out of my chin and mustache, ugh.  It is horrible.  However, I just went to talk to a natural chiropractor and she has noticed that my body is sensitive to soy, chocolate, msg, rice and potatoes and she wants me to go gluten free.  She said gluten plays a role in the thyroid dysfunction.  She said it will take a couple weeks to see a difference for weight loss so I'm going to continue my nutrition program and see what happens.  I originally lost 13 pounds just doing my Body by Vi shakes.  If you would like to learn more about this program, I would be glad to forward you more info.  Or you can view the website at http://www.weddingdaybodybyvi.com  This has been helping brides all across the country look and feel better quickly.  It's nutrition not just a weight loss pill.  Let me know if you would like any further information.  You can get some discounts if you keep watch at https://www.facebook.com/WeddingDayBodyByVi  I'd be glad to send out samples too.  Good luck with your situation.  Laughing

I'm not sure if Hypo and Hyper thyroidism is treated with the same drugs but my mom was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and all that was given to her (about 8 years ago) was Centrum Performance vitamins. That and a very complex diet plan to follow which consisted of basically no carbs whatsoever. Have you talked to your doctor about juicing? I've heard it has great benefits. I'm about to start a juice fast next week. I don't recommend fasting if you have any kind of illness but maybe an addition to your normal healthy diet would be beneficial. A friend of mine had a horrible accident a few years ago and swears a lot of his problems have been cured due to juicing.

Wow! That sounds a lot like my average diet too. I freaking LOVE my green smotthies....try adding kale. You can't taste it either and it is super packed with nutrients.

To lose weight I have dropped carbs down to a bare minimum...including fruit and starchy veggies. But I am starting to work myself up to small amounts of healthy fats and carbs. Just a little. I think I may be a carb addict so I'm trying to get my carbs only from fruit and veggies for a while, and only a small amount. I did have a  fruit salad, black bean burger and half of a home made bun the other night and it was so strange to eat carbs again! It was a much healthier "carb frenzy" than say, a pizza. And I didn't gain any weight from it.  Thanks for the support and input!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: My thyroid is trying to sabotage my wedding dress! : A few nights ago I had some friends over and they recommended juicing as well. Then my coworker bought a juicer that he is raving about. It must be a sign.

I'm giving it a shot since it's mostly veggies so it can't possibly do any harm right? Visit this site, I saw it a few months ago but decided to give it a try after a few friends testimonies. Their "Cures" can't be coincidences.

  • Yeah I started off with ONLY low-starch veggies and lean proteins. The first day I had a headache ALL DAY. It was horrible. Day two I was craving sugar and bread intensely. Day three I just wanted fruit. But by day five I felt energized, satisfied, and happy. I eventually began adding a TINY amount of healthy fats and fruits. The key is only a tiny bit. Look up "paleolithic diet" that is kind of what I'm basing this off of. No processed foods or dairy.

Today is day 10 and I've lost 8lbs. I am flabbergasted. I have restricted carbs before but never cut out dairy and bread entirely like I have now. That seems to be the trick for me.

I am also looking to try the "couch to 5k" program: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

The crazy thing is...I WANT to do it. I feel more energized and happy on this new diet. Maybe bread was slowing me down more than I realized.

I believe a big reason it is working is because my body doesnt recognize processed foods, so it stores them as fats. But your body knows EXACTLY what to do with vegetables, so it gets to work using them for your organs, hair, brain, teeth, etc.

I know I found my answer through this thread. But I love hearing from everyone, I like new ideas. And hopefully this thread can help someone else in my position.
