Carnations are expensive as roses?

I recently talked to a florist and they said that carnations are as pricey as roses, nowadays. REALLY??

I sent them a pic of flowers I have at home from Sam's Club and they confirmed that they are carnations (they are just really big ones).

I find it really hard to believe that if I did carnation centerpieces it would be as expensive as roses. Has anyone heard anything similiar before?

In bulk, they pretty much are.
I had thought of carnation centerpieces for my wedding (I DIY'd my flowers), but I ended up doing hydrangeas because it was going to end up costing less than the carnations.
We ended up using roses for the bouquets.

My florist just told me this, and I thought she was lying!  I am glad you posted something similar because she seemed really trustworthy prior to that statement.  She said they are really in demand riight now and the price is up.

Are you kidding me? I remember getting carnations for my friends in elementary school for less than a dollar a piece! Talk about ridiculous!

Maybe the demand for cheaper went up so the price went up bc it could? I bet if it was any other "non-wedding" event, they prob are a ton cheaper.

Though not happy to hear that it's the norm, I am happy to hear that you guys have heard the same thing. Perhaps it's the florist conspiracy... :-)

    NOT TRUE!!! ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE!!!
    Exhibit A:

At this place 100 roses cost $94 but 100 carnations cost $66!
The carnations maybe a little bit smaller than the roses, but I can not imagine them being small enough to knock off 30 bucks. Granted wear your florist usually gets them from may be overpriced. But one or both of you is definitely getting ripped off!

It is always possible, as the prices of flowers fluxuate with the season/demand/trend.

Currently, however, carnations sell for an average of $0.39 per stem.

It's important to take into consideration that long stem, single head carnations tend to be more expensive that your miltiple stemmed variety.
We are using all carnations for our wedding because we are going for a very modern, clean look.
It's always great to hear that you can get DOUBLE the amount of flowers for the same price!
After all, we all want maximum impact for minimum price :)
