Room blocks?

I'm not really sure how this works... do I pay for a set amount of rooms ahead of time? How does this work?!

Thanks!

Usually you just call ahead and request that a set of rooms that you think you'll need for out of town guests. They will usually give you a special rate and code for you to pass on to your guests if they want to get a room for the night. Some hotels offer incentives. We chose Staybridge Suites, because its the only hotel close to the recepetion, and if have 15 rooms booked, we get a free room and a free shuttle from the recepetion to the hotel for an hour.

Ditto Jashley. You shouldn't have to pay for anything -- though I would make sure that you ask if you'll be charged for any rooms that go unbooked.

When you call, what will happen is that they'll tell you the max you're allowed to block. You tell them how many you want and they'll reserve them and give you a special code. They should also tell you a date by which the rooms need to be reserved in order to secure the special rate. Rooms not blocked by that date will go back into the general pool (though as I said, you should confirm you're not charged for these.)

The biggest lesson for me was re: OOT gift bags. You'll want to ask your hotel if you can do them (if you want to) and how they handle it. Some hand them out at check-in, some will place them in the rooms for you. Some hotels also charge a handling fee that you will have to pay. So you'll want to be clear on that.

Thanks ladies! One other question, how far in advance should I do this? my wedding isn't till May 2012. Thank you!

My wedding is June 2012 and my blocks are booked. It depends on were the hotels are. For instance mine being in Detroit made me do it sooner because once concerts and sport game schedules are released the rates go up.

I think you can do it now. My wedding is in April 2012 and I had them blocked a couple months ago, so maybe 10 or 11 months out. Why not? The hotels let you do it and it's one less thing on your list.

I actually work in sales at a hotel :) and have handled MANY wedding blocks. What area is your wedding? Usually the max is 20 rooms for a block, but the sooner you get people to reserve, the better chance they'll add more in. Even your guests dont pay upfront. They just need a credit card to hold it with.

That is not the case for any of the hotels I reasearched or the ones I ened up blocking with.  My block at our main hotel is 40 rooms and our secondary is 25.  My main block filled before I even sent out invitations.

I just need like 10 or less rooms. We're having a very small wedding (50-75) and most are in town, but maybe 5 couples are out of town. We're in Troy, so we were looking at the Marriott, Drury Inn, Somerset Inn.
