Wedding planning for dummies?

Hi!

This is so overwhelming! A friend of mine suggested this site and there's SO much info it's great but I have no clue where to start.

My boyfriend of 6 years proposed in mid December in front of 400+ coworkers at his office Christmas party, it was nuts. I couldn’t be any happier :)

Now that the holidays are over we want to start talking about planning and all that jazz. I don’t want to start officially choosing dates until we have some cash saved up. I’ve heard so many stories about couples going over budget or taking out loans and get stuck paying it for years. I’m not very knowledgeable with what goes into planning a wedding except for the dress, ring, venue, food, you know the obvious ones. I guess my first question for now is this:What is considered 'peak season' for weddings? I read in one of the articles that it’s cheaper if you book during off peak.

I appreciate any replies. You’ll be seeing my name across the message board in the near future every time I think of something to ask :P

  • I used the checklist on this site and found it immensely helpful.

<div>Yes, I totally agree with this.  Start by checking off or hiding things you don't want to do, like I didn't want a guestbook so I deleted every reminder about that.  </div><div>

  • Congrats, my fiance proposed at his Christmas work party as well, although it was less than 100 people. He is a quiet person, so it was a complete surprise that he did it in front of that many people. We had been together just a day over 8 years when he proposed (we were waiting to get through college, so we are broke too :)  ). My issue is that we are trying to plan ours for May or June, so I am stressing a little about having such little time. I am sure we will be looking at and posting on many of the same threads as we try to have our dream wedding on a low budget! Good luck!
  • Congrats and welcome! Definitely check out all the tools the knot has. They've been great. Peak season is usually May through the end of summer (at least in my area) I'm getting married in June but booked my vendors far enough in advance that it wasn't a problem. I haven't had higher prices or anything like that either
