S/O gifts

So, OMHs, or people closer to their wedding date:

When did guests end up getting gifts? And how many won't bother? We're 6 weeks out, our RSVP deadline is today, and a whopping 8 households have bought us gifts. I think I'm half just surprised and half annoyed.

our wedding is 3 (!!!!) days away and we didnt have gifts start rolling in until about a week or two ago. your wedding is still 6 weeks out; i really wouldnt be concerned or annoyed that guests havent bought you anything yet. most people wait until the last minute. i dont think the RSVP deadline has anything to do with gifts... if anything, you should be more concerned with the # of guests who havent responded yet, not whether or not they've bought you a gift yet.

Oh we decided that Amy Vanderbilt can sit on it and twist. Of the 165 that were on our original invite lists, we have RSVPs (or at least tentative "I'm pretty sure I will/won't come") all but 5 households. We actually did pretty well -- it was looking dicey about a week ago but everybody pulled through.

It sounds like I should be 100% surprised and 0% annoyed. Or maybe not even that surprised. Thanks!

we only got about 10 gifts (max) before the wedding..everything else was brought to us during the reception (grrrrr) but most chinese-wedding-gifts are cash, so we only ended up with two car fulls of gifts, since our parents carried our envelopes. not tooooo bad.

We received most of the gifts at the wedding.  We did have a few prior, but they were typically within a month before the wedding.  People didn't buy for the wedding off the registry until like 3 days prior.  Of our 75 guests, we had 5 (2 in the WP - take a wild guess as to which ones) not bring any gifts or cards.  Gifts, fine, but bring an effing card!

I was surprised at how many gifts we did get ahead of time.  We started getting gifts 2 months early and received about 12 gifts beforehand.  At the wedding, we received mostly cards and about 6-8 gifts.  We then received maybe 5 gifts right after the wedding.

We had 3 people attend and not give us a gift.  One couple gave us just a card.  I'm with Tygirl...I can respect no gift, but no card...that was disappointing!

oh i didn't read your question----

i didn't registry stalk (tsk tsk, niq), so i don't know *when* gifts were bought...but i do know some of my friend admitted that they went after the ceremony, on the way to the reception they bought gifts....

as for people that didn't get us anything? we were really surprised at some of the guests that didn't...i.e. my moh's family didn't get us a single thing. (my moh did, but her parents, sister, and sisters BF, did not). they got us a card that said our gift was coming..but we never got anything...we asked about 6 months later, and they said "oh yeah, it's still being shipped".....i think we're giving up now.

but overall out of 170+ guests, i think we got about 10 people that didn't get us even a card.

Hmm... We actually got about 10 to 15 gifts delivered to us before the wedding. The rest were cards with cash/gift cards at the reception and another 10 or so actual gifts at the wedding. We only had three households not get us anything. Two of them not even a card. Like PP, I understand if you can't afford a gift but at least write a nice heartfelt note in a card! Argh. I was really pissed. Household #3 was a set of my grandparents, they somehow made their way onto my aunts gift, which was a toaster. Bless their hearts, but you could obviously tell on the card that my aunt wrote them in (it was written smaller and in different ink, but the same writing). Nice.

We're about three weeks out (Yikes!).  I got a few things at my shower, but most gifts were not on the registry.  I have received one present (check from grandparents who can't come) and I know (from stalking) that 1 other present was bought, nothing else.  Then again, less than 10 of our guests actually RSVP'd, some did so orally and the rest we had to bug to get answers.  So, they're a bunch of slackers.  : )

I was pretty surprised about gifts.  Granted, we haven't opened the ones that were brought to the wedding (it was less than a carload though), but we got maybe 5? before the wedding.  And 5 cards.  NONE of which had cash.  We had friends telling us they received anywhere from $13,000 to $40,000 in cash, which we weren't expecting at all, but we weren't really expecting none either...

Anyway, the moral of my ramblings is, gifts are totally unpredictable.
