Buffet- is it necessary to have dinner AND salad plates?

We are having dinner buffet style at our wedding. Our caterer's quote included pricing for dinner plates and salad plates. Personally when I go to a buffet everything goes on one plate including salad. We were thinking of just getting 150 dinner plates (for 100 guests) in case anyone wants seconds. Is anyone else with me that salad plates are not necessary?

  • I guess it depends how formal of an event you are hosting and how promint the salad portion of the buffet is.  If you just are offering one small salad area, then perhaps not, but at my buffet I am having a whole table of salad stuff.

  • I'd opt for more plates than 150 for 100 guests (salad plates could do the trick).

I've never met someone who doesn't get at least seconds at a buffet.  Plus it's very rude/gross to take a plate that's already been used back through the buffet line so you really ought to count on a bunch of excess plates.
  • Unless you are offering a large array of salads I don't think salad plates are necessary.  All the buffets I have been to everything went on one plate.  Unless you are having stations and then each station will provide their own small plate of the food they are serving.

  • I don't think salad plates are necessary. However, if you don't have them, I think you should order more regular sized plates. The salad will displace some of the food that would have otherwise gone on the regular plate and likely cause more people to go up for seconds.
  • I'm gonna have to vote for salad plates. Our caterer said he would definitely supply dinner plates and cake plates and salad plates if we wanted them. He said some people just don't like their salads touching the other stuff and in his experience people will just grab a plate for salad and a plate for dinner. I'm one of those people. In that sense, it might be cheaper to get salad plates. Are you having cake plates as well? Because there's no way I would put cake on the same as anything else (except maybe ice cream! lol) Just a thought...
  • Maybe you can make up the difference with some disposable/look alike dinner plates. You can buy these at party city or at smartyhadaparty on line.
  • I personally am fine with putting salad on my dinner plate.  I wouldn't think twice about it if there was only 1 plate AS LONG AS my table wasn't first dismissed to get salad and then 20 minutes later dismissed again to get the main course.  Then I would think it is gross to have to use the same plate.

On a side note, I am amazed at how many people said there needs to be all these extra plates because people will get seconds (and maybe even thirds).  I would never ever get seconds at a wedding unless the waiters came around and asked if anyone wanted anything else because there was extra.  I consider that extremely rude.

The type of dinner is called a buffet, not an all you can eat buffet.
