Joint account?

So, FI and I opened up our joint account this past Friday...and it prompted me to think of both questions and advice for y'all (based on what the bank told us).

I currently bank with PNC, and FI banks with TD.  We decided that we will both keep our own accounts in addition to the joint account.  We opened up the joint account at TD- and I was not happy to learn their "free" checking is only free for the first year.  So, it made me think, where do you ladies bank at/plan on opening your joint accounts?  My only requirement (and the reason I am still with PNC) is I want something national; well, that and free checking.

Second, the advice.  Now, I know we have all been to weddings.  And we are all going to get checks for gifts at our own weddings.  Here are some tips that they told us while opening up our account:
*When writing out a check to a couple getting married, address it to Bride Maiden Name OR Groom Name.  Put the OR instead of and!  This way, either of them can endorse and deposit the check without the other's signature.  If you put "and" on it, then both have to endorse it.  Make it easier on the bride and groom!
*Instead, you can make it out to just the bride or the groom- whether you do one or the other, always put the Bride's Maiden Name!  You never know when she is going to get around to changing her name, or if she is even planning on it!

Anyway, just thought I would pass those tips and ask those questions to you all...I figured it your guests ask you, then you can tell them whatever way you prefer, but at least it's the correct info!

we both already have individual accounts at wachovia so i'm assuming we will just open our joint account there, we've both used that bank for many years and are happy with it.

We opened up a joint account last year when we started saving for the wedding.  I was with a credit union and FI with PNC.  We also kept our own accounts but opened a joint checking/savings at PNC.  Of all the banks we researched, they seemed to be the most "friendly".

And we've already run into a Mr.&Mrs. check issue.  Someone from FI's family responded unable to attend the wedding and sent us a check made out to Mr.&Mrs.  We haven't made it to PNC yet to find out how we can go about depositing it in our joint account.

Opps, forgot about that tip, too.

If it is signed to "Mr. and Mrs. Jones", and you still have your last name, you have to sign BOTH names (Jane Doe and Jane Jones), and your FI has to sign it as well.  So the check will need a total of THREE signatures to deposit it.

Sorry I forgot it, and thanks for reminding me- I did ask that question specifically to find out what to do in that situation!

These are such good things to know!!

The FI and I each have our own accounts but all the money goes into mine lol.
We have a bill account and a spending account. He keeps his open just to have it. I must say it works well.. I am so much better with budgeting than he is!!
