if you want a good photographer they can start at 2000+, if you want a great artist as a photographer you will pay 3,000-6,000+

I spent $4000 on photography for my wedding and had a budget of $15,000 total. Best money I spent without a doubt.

Depends on where you live.  I'm from a smaller town.  Typically you can get a decent photographer for 1500 or less around here.  I spent around 1800 because that part of the wedding is very important to me.  Our photographer typically doesn't do anything for less than 2500, but we know them and she cut us a deal.

You just have to decide what you're willing to spend more money on :)

Spending between $2,500-$6,000 is very common for good photography. Sure you can find something cheaper, but it's not going to have the same quality. Also beware of branding for some of the really, really expensive photographers. Just because they have good branding and high prices doesn't mean they are good either. Evaluate the pictures themselves to decide whether the work is quality or not.

We spent a very large porportion of our small budget on photography, because that was one of the most important things for us (other than the actual act of getting married). You just have to decide how much you can spend and then how good of quality you want.
  • There's sort of a bottom line number for most photographers to actually stay in business (for those running legitimate businesses, paying taxes, upkeep on pro equipment, software, etc) and it's usually $2000+ depending on the area. When you start looking at photographers lower than that you'll run into less experience, sometimes they're not even an actual business registered with the state, and MANY of them don't have liability insurance which most venues require, so be sure to do your homework about that if you go with someone for less.

I paid $3,070 for our photographer in St. Louis this past October.  Worst decision we ever made and I totally regret it.  It was the most important aspect of the wedding to us as well which is why we were willing to spend 30% of the entire budget on it.  Unfortunately, no matter what a photographer tells you leading up to that day - if you pay in advance, like most make you - they can do whatever the hell they want.  We have four quality photos out of what we asked for and verbally promised.  Unfortunately, that verbal promise doesn't hold up in the contract.  Whatever you decide, make sure you have your Must-Have Shot List added into the contract before you sign it.  If you don't, the photographer does not have to take any picture you ask for.Be really careful who you trust!  We used Patrick Pope Photography if you're near the St. Louis area, just fyi.
  • If you really don't want to pay that much, it is worth checking into Photography schools. There are plenty of fantastic photographer's who have not broken into the biz but are capable of snapping the pictures you need/want.

I did some wedding photography when I was in college and it was a great portfolio addition - I didn't charge a lot though because I was still in school and not technically a professional.

Another way to bring price down is to negotiate with your photographer on prints. If you don't get ANY prints that will bring your price down, and then you have the option of just going to your local favorite picture printing location and getting it done for cheaper.
