ivory or white dress?

okay, so I found this dress that I am absolutely in love with!  It is perfect, I know that it is the dress.  The problem is that I have always pictured myself in a bright white gown.  The store only has the dress in Ivory and it looks absolutely amazing in Ivory, but I'm scared to stray away and order a white dress like i've always dreamed of.

I have blonde hair, and pretty tan skin all year round.  We are having the wedding next June, my question is do I stray from my dream and go with the ivory?

My colors were originally going to be strickly black, and white with pops of yellow.  This obviously might change after having an ivory dress?

Re: ivory or white dress?

  • Ivory is better IMO! I don't think you need to match the furniture...
  • Hey!! I see your a NC Knottie---ME TOO!!! If your in LOVE with the dress I think you have found the one.  But it conflicts with something which in this case is your dream of having a white dress.  If you love the dress that much it sounds like you found THE DRESS.  You can still have a black and white wedding like PP said you dont have to match the decor. Ivory is just as beautiful as white is.

Example) I went dress shopping and specifically said I don't want X on my wedding dress.  Well I tried on lots of dresses.  But none of them had a specific back that I wanted--but it could be added in alterations.  I really wanted to show my mom in person what kind of back I was talking about and how it looked on me.  Well the only dress in my size was a dress that was all about X but had that back I wanted.  So I tried it on and it totally changed my mind about X.

To me it sounds like your X is ivory.

PS venture over the the NC board sometime those ladies are super nice and helpful with NC related stuff!

    Happy Planning!!!
  • You could always try on a dress by the same manufacturer in the white color that it would be, and see if that looks good with your skin tone.

  • I have the same exact problem as you.  I am having a black/white wedding with touches of red-but I fell for an ivory dress.  The dress was 40% off-in perfect condition so I couldn’t resist.  Im glad I got the dress even though I initially wanted white.  Luckily I hadn’t purchased anything white for the wedding at that point, so I made the minor change of white to ivory.  I am having tons of candles, and since ivory is softer than white, I think it will actually look better against the candlelight.

One thing I learned is you really need to keep an open mind because chances are the gown you find to be perfect may not have been perfect in your mind beforehand.

Thank you all! I think I am going for the ivory dress!
  • I always wanted to get a white dress but I fell inlove with an ivory.  I like the way the beading looks on an ivory dress.  IMO ivory looks better with a tan too.  White kind of looks too bright with a tan on some people depending how tan you are.
  • Ivory = white = ecru = eggshell = candlelight = every incarnation you can think of.  They're all white.  Stop overthinking.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • you don't have to change anything with an ivory dress, when people see ivory what they are actually thinking is white. in most shades of ivory unless another bride is standing next to you in the same dress in white no one is ever going to know it's not white
  • I'd go with the ivory.  You may consider checking the line's "white" color as PP suggested, but if it is only based on what you thought you'd get and your decor, I wouldn't worry about it.  If you feel great in the dress, that's the way to go!  FWIW, some of the dresses I looked at in stark white looked cheaper than the diamond white or ivory versions (not saying that is true across the board, just with some designers' white).
