Unique marriage license question

I have a question regarding my "new name". I have been married before and have young children so i kept my married name after my divorce. I'm getting remarried. When we applied for our marriage license I chose to have my name written keeping my previous married name and adding my new married name (no hyphens). I wanted to be able to still have the same last name as my children in some form. My question is :when I sign my name do I have to sign using both last names on all documents? I realize my legal name will include both but for example does my bank checks have to be signed using both names? I apologize in advance if this confusing.

Re: Unique marriage license question

  • Will your name be (a)  Mary Susan Smith Jones?  or (b) Mary Smith Jones?

I went with (b) and only use Mary Jones.  (My middle is my maiden, not former married - I dropped that like a hot potato!)

If you are going with (a) then I think you need to use both for your legal signature. ~Donna (aka Mary)
  • You don't have to sign using all names, unless a document specifies that you must sign your full legal name (I've had to do this on some life insurance documents and military enlistment papers).  Otherwise, you can sign however you want -- a lot of people signitures aren't even legible.   Mine is just my first and middle initials and my last name.....but looks like one big squiggle.

  • Unless is for legal purpose you  choose how to sign or what format you wish to use
