I'm insane!

After several rounds with several caterers I think I have given up. I am so frustrated. I'm facing not getting what I want and paying a huge delivery fee.
I may do most of my catering myself. I am doing a tea party in the afternoon. It is all just petit fours, finger sandwiches, and such. I will only make the cookies, petit fours, and cheeseballs. I can make the sweets and freeze them and I can make the cheeseballs way in advance too. The other stuff I can get from a local vendor but they are giving me fits over what I want for the sweets and cheese.
I have made this kind of food in bigger quantities so that isn't the issue. I can save some money but more importantly I can have great food that I can trust.
Am I completely nuts? I don't know. The fi doesn't want extra stress for me but I think this is less stress than dealing with caterers.

Re: I'm insane!

  • You aren't completely nuts. However, I don't think your FI is wrong either. That's a lot to get ready close to the wedding and you're going to have some other things on your mind. You may have done these kinds of quanties before, but never when you have so much else also going on, you know?

Is there anyone who might be willing to help you? It might be a big help if you could ask a sister/bestfriend/cousin/mother/aunt/etc to give you hand. I know that's VERY anti-knot rules to ask this sort of thing but, still, someone might be willing and you could of course "repay" them with a really nice gift. It just might ease the stress if you do need to run off and deal with another wedding related issue and you still have 20 sandwiches to do, you know?
  • I am passing off the cheese to my son. He worked as a cheesemonger so I trust his judgement.
My other son can help me bake if it comes down to it. He is remodeling the house and getting it ready for the wedding but sometimes he needs a break. He bakes all the time.
My only real wedding things to deal with still are writing my vows, favors, fine details for centerpieces, and the programs. FI has to deal with the programs.
The favors should be done Thursday. They are super easy to make.

  • I think your plan sounds fine then. As long as you have some back up if last minute jitters happen (or last minute things need to be handled unexpectedly!), you should be fine. It sounds like you're on top of everything and you can do a bunch in advance, so if it'll cause you less stress than dealing with caterers, go for it!
  • Hey, if you can do, do it!  My FI Mom's is doing the catering for us.  She loves to cook and has a huge Italian family so she is used to it.  She makes great food!  We didn't want to have her cook because of the stress, but she insisted and is excited about it!  It will be nice to eat something you know will taste great and save money at your wedding :)
