Cakes by Carolynn or Publix for Wedding Cake?

Hi, ladies,

Hope your planning is going well!

I'm a destination bride getting married at the Tradewinds in St Pete Beach. I've heard great things about both Cakes by Carolynn  and Publix for wedding cake. What is your opinion? I would never think to get a wedding cake from a grocery store up here in Chicago, so I'd love to know what you think on price, taste and look for both of these options.

Thanks so much!!

I never looked into Carolyn but we are getting ours from Publix. Their cakes are so good and they have been so helpful in coming up with a design and size that fits our budget with the amount of people we will have.

My first wedding I got my cake from Publix. It was beautiful and tasty!

This wedding I am using Cakes by Carolynn. I would say hands down it is the best cake I have ever eaten, and honestly I'm really not a cake person. We've had to change out cake style, size and flavor so many times and they are so helpful!

Either way you go though, I think you will end up happy.

I used Cakes by Carolynn for our wedding and we were very pleased.  The cake was not only gorgeous and exactly what we asked for, but it tasted amazing!  We chose their famous Amaretto Raspberry with raspberry filling and it was a huge hit with our guests!  Everyone loved it.

Publix makes great cakes too.  The only negative is that you would need to find a store that is nearby your venue (not sure if they deliver) and you might be dealing with different employees each time so you don't really build a rapport.

If the prices are comparable, I would just do a taste test when possible and see which one you like better.  Our cake:

Oh wow, ladies! These sounds (and look -- thank you for the pic) incredible.

The Publix is like 0.25 mi down from our destination, so I guess we'll definitely give it a go!

One more question, and feel free not to respond if it makes you uncomfortable:  We're looking at having about 80 guests and hope to spend under $250. Is this possible? I know I can ask the vendors, but first I thought I'd ask those of you with experience.

Thank you again and CONGRATS and GOOD LUCK!!!

The cake I had from from Publix was made to feed 100 people and it was $400. I'm sure a more simple design would make it cheaper. It all really depends on what you want done to it.

I'm not sure about Cakes by Carolynn. My venue is actually throwing it in for free, so I have no idea what is costs.

You would think that Publix would be the cheapest cake place but they're not! I am using Chef Nelson, and I just looked at my paperwork and the cost of a cake for 85 people is listed at $203. I think all of his cakes come with a free anniversary cake too. I am planning my wedding from NYC and we did tastings at 4 places when I was in Tampa for the holidays. Chef Nelson's was delish and was the cheapest. Olympia Catering was the next best value for the taste in my opinion. FYI, there was only one other cake vendor that we looked at that was more expensive than Publix. Good luck!

OK, mpgator -- you're amazing. That's really good information. And it's a little scary, too. I was going to just assume that a freakin' grocery store would be by far the cheapest since it's not personal service and it's pretty mass produced (well, I'm assuming -- I honestly don't live there and truly don't know for sure).

Chef Nelson to the rescue! Thanks!!

    Publix.
And Publix WAS the cheapest for the classic style of cake we wanted.  Sometimes the very cheapest place isn't the best place for what you really want.

Thanks for that last post -- very insightful. We just want classic and simple and CHEAP. I really dont' care about cake but he does. And I think simply designed cake can be squished in one's face just as easily as complex.:):)
