Healthier Substitutions

Thought it would be an interesting/helpful discussion to share our suggestions of what favorite foods we've been able to find healthier substitutions for, and what still tasted good and what we didn't like as well.

ground turkey -- didn't like it as well as ground beef in spaghetti, but did like it in enchiladas, and liked it in chili better than in spaghetti sauce

wheat pasta -- didn't mind it once smothered with marinara sauce, or with a little parmesan cheese on it, but fiance tasted more of a difference

brown rice -- was surprised that I didn't mind it as much as I thought, although again fiance tasted more of a difference, and it takes longer to cook

smoked sausage -- liked the chicken sausage in red beans and rice but not in jambalaya, but did like the light sausage in jambalaya

corn tortillas -- my mother suggested that these were less starchy than regular/flour tortillas, the enchiladas I made with them tasted good but didn't look pretty because the tortillas broke apart when I rolled them up

brown rice jambalaya mix -- it came out crunchy and I think I either should have followed the directions on the package to reserve the meat until the end and/or I should have added more water, but even fiance didn't taste a difference it was just the texture
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.

  • For now I have one for you - no fat plain yogurt instead of sour cream.

It seems odd, but it really gives the same refreshing flavour - just isn't as thick!

  • spaghetti squash instead of noodles -- LOVE!  Even got my 19 year old picky brother to agree it "wasn't bad" -- he prefered noodles -- but he also plays college football and frankly -- NEEDS the noodles -- and weight (words I WISH I could say about myself! :) )

  • -Mustard with spices instead of about 8 million other condiments (especially instead of mayo)
-brown rice, multigrain, and whole wheat everything
-homemade chocolate granola instead of store-bought sugar-loaded garbage

Greek yogurt would be even better - it has a ton of protein.

  • Corn tortillas I have noticed are easiest to work with when you use them when they are very fresh, heat them very briefly in the microwave wrapped in paper towels, and work quickly.

I started using fat free half and half in my coffee - it is 0 points on weight watchers.  I've substituted it in other things and cannot tell a difference in the way ti tastes or cooks.

Fat free plain greek yogurt is a gem....it can be used ANYWHERE sour cream is, and most of the time I cannot tell a difference.  My FI can....but tolerates it most of the time.  It is high in protein as well.  It has the same consistency as sour cream as well.

Lettuce instead of bread - think lettuce wraps but you can stuff it with anything from tuna salad to fajita filling.  It definitely changes the experience, but you get all the flavor you are looking for without much sacrifice.

These are a few....Looking forward to hearing more!

spray a cookie sheet with olive oil or canola oil spray.  lay down corn tortillas on the cookie sheet and lightly spray them on the top.  bake at 350 for 2-4 minutes or so.  they'll be pliable for you to roll enchiladas in.

my H's family (hispanic) fries the tortillas in oil, but this works just as well (I promise!) and you don't have nearly the greasy-fattiness.
  • I recently started adding cinnamon to my coffe grounds and I found that I don't need cream or sugar! I used to love the flavored creamer, but I don't need it anymore! I also totally agree with the lettuce instead of bread any mustard instead of mayo or other condiments!

  • I have to second using greek yogurt for sour cream. We like to use the Fage 0%. I love that I don't have to skimp on it.

  • Instead of ice cream I put yoplait whip's into the freezer - it's like half the calories of ice cream but it satisfies that sweet craving

I agree. I use greek yogurt all the time instead as a substite for sour cream.  love it!!
    some others:
    quinoa instead rice
mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes.  just google a recipe. I used it in shepherd's pie and my finance didn't even know they weren't potatoes!

also mix fake vegetarian "ground beef" into the real meet along with chopped mushrooms.

I'm going to try this. FI is watching his carbs and this would make my life so much easier! I keep seeing it and now I have to try it. Have you used it grated as a sub for rice?

  • I found a weight watchers recipe that combines cauliflower (2/3) and potatoes (1/3), boil them together with minced garlic and salt until tender, then mash.  Season with spray butter and milk or fat free cream (takes less and makes them creamier) and you REALLY can't tell the difference from mashed potatoes!!  SO YUMMY!!

no i've never seen that. that's very interesting, i'm going to have to look it up.  I'm assuming you must grate it uncooked and then lightly steam it.  fantastic idea.  The trick with th mashed cauliflower is getting the water out after you cook it.  I steam it first and the drain it and put it back in the pan over heat and stir it around alot to try to get alot of the water to evaporate out.
