Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Reception Music

Hey!  Quickie question for y'all:

At our wedding reception, there will be NO DANCING...and it's just basically a lunch reception.  And so you know now, there will be no hiring of DJs or musicians for this.

With the above in mind, what SONGS should be played as background music during the reception?  I've got a few I've figured out already... please keep in mind that this will be at a church, so songs with inappropriate lyrics will not work (no cursing, overly suggestive).

Personally, I'm hoping to stay away from too "rock heavy".  I want it to be anything from bluesy, jazzy, oldies, pop, acoustic, instrumental if it works...  stuff like that.  Something people could talk over, and not feel distracted by.

Please send me songlists and suggestions of SONGS... :-)

Thanks y'all!

We asked our dj to play late 50s / early 60s romantic stuff at our cocktail hour and it went over really well:

Sam Cooke - Cupid, You Send Me, Wonderful World
The Drifters - Some Kind of Wonderful, There Goes My Baby, This Magic Moment
The Chiffons - One Fine Day
Dusty Springfield - I Only Wanna Be With You
The Everly Brothers - All I Have to do is Dream
Ricky Nelson - You Are The Only One
Elvis Presley - I Can't Help Falling In Love

I also think 40s standards would work nicely for your party:

Frank Sinatra - I've Got the World on a String, Witchcraft, Under My Skin
    Mel Torme - That's All
Tony Bennet - The Way You Look Tonight
    Nat King Cole - Unforgettable

    Good luck!

Robyn covered essentially what I was going to suggest...
    Frank Sinatra
    Nat King Cole
    Ella Fitzgerald
    Barry White
    Barry Manilow
    Stevie Wonder
    Sonny & Cher
    The Beatles
    John Lennon

To make it easy you could buy a CD or multi-CD pack of "100 Classic Love Songs" or something.  Then you just hit play (or rip them to iTunes).  There would likely be few inappropriate lyrics in those.  Faster and easier than hunting down individual songs.

    Great stuff!  Thanks guys!

I've got a few of those... :-)  I'm also gonna play some more modern stuff too.  My wedding isn't too fancy or anything... :-)
