Hawaii wedding - need help!

I am a Texan who just got engaged to an Australian....so of course we're planning our wedding halfway in between - HAWAII!!  The only problem is that I've never been there and don't know the first thing about getting started.  We're thinking the island of Kuai.  Any adivce, suggestions, venues, caterers, antything would be super helpful.

Thank you in advance!!!!

  • Hi and welcome to the board.  Each of the islands has their own charm.  As for where to get started I would try looking up wedding sites and what not on that island and see where it takes you.  The next thing is figuring out what type of wedding you want.  That way you can narrow down your search focus.  Good luck with the research and come here to ask any question you have.  This board is full of great info.
  • We got married in Maui and it is perfect!!  Why are you thinking Kauai?  It's a gorgeous island but be aware that everything shuts down very early there.

  • What type of wedding are you interested in? Hotel, beach, private estate? The St regis princeville kauai is gorgeous! There's plenty of secluded beaches there too if you want something simpler. You can't have chairs or an arch on the sand though in hawaii so your guests have to stand.
  • Congratulations on your engagement! I am a Kauai bride so if you do have any specific questions just let me know or check out my planning bio. There are a few Kauai brides here, but we are vastly outnumbered by Maui and Oahu brides.

To echo the girls above, figure out the style of wedding that you are wanting first and then you can narrow down things from there. On the one comment above about Kauai shutting down early ... my reception venue is open to 10:30, which I believe is pretty standard on most of the islands. So unless you're looking on having an after reception event you should be fine.

  • Congratulations on welcome!   Not sure about Kauai, but we planned our wedding from Texas and can't imagine how we would have done it without our WC, she saved us time, money and alot of sleepless nights.
  • This is how our thought process went - you can decide how it applies to you.

    1 - We chose Hawaii.
2 - We knew we wanted to rent a home / estate where we could stay AND have the wedding ceremony and reception.  This was for various reasons, one of which being that we woud be able to make and host several meals, and the bar, which we could stock at Costco.
IMPLEMENT FILTER #1 - Only a few of the Hawaiian islands have a Costco, so that ruled out the others.
3 - We started searching for our 'estate'.  It was easy to arrive at a short list of the ones that could accommodate a lot of people as many have occupancy restrictions even on the number of guests that can attend a party.  That search really determined our island. After we chose Maui and our venue, then we started talking to WCs, looking at caterers, etc.  Also, keep in mind that with some vendors - such as photographers - you don't have to limit yourself to who's available on the island.  A lot of photographers will travel.

Another thing we considered was direct flights.  If we had discovered that direct flights were available from our home town to only a couple of the islands, that might have influenced that decision.  That's something you may want to consider for your guests.  Will they have to take 1, 2 or 3 planes to get to your destination?

Anyway, lots to think about.....good luck!
  • Wow - awesome adive....thank you all!!!!
