DJ/Musician Combo?

Someone at work was telling me how there are DJ's who also may sing in addition to playing music. We can't afford a full band, but this may be a way to compromise and get a little bit of both.

Now, before I start looking around, I'm curious is anyone knows how this works in real life? Sounds to me like it may border on cheesefest if not done right.  Anyone know of any companies that do it well?

    Spencer is awesome!

Dance to the music entertainment based n CT. Seen them at the Ethan Allen bridal shows! They have a bunch of DJ's who can also sing. You can click to hear a sample of them.

We are using Dave Elgart Music in NJ and they offer various combinations of live entertainment and DJ. You can have any combination of live instruments from 1 to 7 I believe, plus a DJ. They start out with live music during cocktail and during the reception the live instruments start to phase out hour by hour into all DJ.
I think they're priced really well. It's much cheaper than a full band and for 4 musicians plus a DJ it's barely more than the best DJ's in the area.

We had a band The Touch www.thetouchpage.com and they were actually pretty reasonable and we loved them!  I don't know how much you're looking to spend, but if you want a band, there are reasonable bands out there too.

I've seen Robin from MRG Productions sing, she is great!  They are DJs  from Long Island, but do shows in Westchester.  I believe I saw them at a Bosco Bridal show. They have reviews on weddingwire.com

I am planning on having a DJ/drummer combo... the lve musician on top of the dj recorded music gives the party a really cool club like vide without being cheezy. I'm most likely going with AList Entertainment as they did my friends wedding this way and it was awesome

they are also providing a jazz trio for the cocktail hour... all very very reasonably priced

This may be a little late... but we are using The DJ Solution husband and wife team. He apparantly plays guitar beautifully and will be playing live music for the ceremony & cocktail hour.
