Helpful post from Money Matters

Guys, I thought you may find this interesting/helpful -- long post from the Nest's Money Matters board about what people regret about their weddings:

Not surprising to me: how many people regret skipping videography

Somewhat surprising to me (because of the number of responses): how many people regret not spending more on photography

Edit to add: and a related post -- what people are happy that they splurged on: http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/43541773.aspx

Great read uppereastsidegirl!  Thank you for that.  It's amazing what ppl remember and what you will regret spending money on later.

We didn't hire a videographer and so far we're not regretting it in the slightest. However:

    - our wedding was only 6 months ago
    - we don't normally like watching home videos or video of ourselves
    - a couple friends got the special dances and the toasts on tape for us anyway

</div><div>I think I would have felt the same if I didn't have a video, but I don't mean that I don't love my video and love having it and think it was worth every penny.  I think it is kind of like having a brother.  I've never had one and have never wished I had one and don't feel robbed or anything for not having one, but maybe that's just because I have no experience with having a brother so I don't know how much my life would have been enriched if that had been added to my life.</div><div>
</div><div>Watching a professionally edited video where I'm shot from good angles on good quality film while professionally made up, and where all of the stupid/regrettable awkward things I say and do in a normal day are edited out is totally unlike watching the trainwrecks that are every time prior to my wedding that I was caught on tape.  Honestly, I can't even watch the special dances or toasts (except for the VERY abbreviated versions in our main wedding video) because they're too embarrassing.  (Just saying that because I think even people who rather die than watch a home video of themselves -- which is probably 90% of the people I know -- should consider getting a wedding video.)

Oh yeah, I've seen some wedding videos on this board that were REALLY well-done. I really liked the one that Danielle/dmoney had in her signature, and the snippet that Cheryl posted was cute as well (where she was opening her gift from her H).

I've never heard someone say that she regretted getting a professional video (unless of course the vendor did a crappy job, or if she was having trouble getting the finished product). As for people who didn't get one, the responses seem fairly split between regretting it and not regretting it.

I can say that I'm pretty satisfied that we didn't pay for a professional photo album. I put a bunch on Facebook, and I made a simple MPix album for us to have but I don't leaf through it that often. I'm even debating if I want to do albums for our parents at this point, because they sat through the slideshow of 700+ pics already, and my mom asked for a crap-ton of prints to give to relatives. However, we can always ask our photographer to do a nice album in the future if we're so inclined.

Wish I spent more on photography - not to say my photographs arent decent.... but I felt like I didn't get the special effects that others paid for.

I dont regret not getting a video either! The pics are enough. How many times are you going to watch it?  I got the highlights of our vows thats enough! To each his own. My photographer was average priced- not some over the top guy and I love my pics, there are too many to choose from.  Again, do what you want to do...within your budget.

I regret not keeping it together through the entire picture taking process.  if you look at my pictures there is a point where I get this ugly face because I am tired.  I wish i would have recognized it and taken a break because there are too many pictures where I just look fed up.  I have a ton where I look great but I see some and I just think "what the heck.  Could you not look good for 2 seconds"

I dont regret not getting a video.  I did have my SIL flip cam the ceremony and for me that was enough.  Its not the best quality but it is nice to have.

I do regret not extending the cocktail hour and wedding.  i went over that decision a thousand times and decided not to do it but I think everyone would have liked an extra 30 minutes for cocktail hour and the reception.  It went too fast.

My hands down number 1 best decision was having my brother be my officiant.  He did such a great job and it made the ceremony so special to me.
