September 2012 Weddings

what are you giving parents as gifts?

Hi there - looking for some inspiration for gifts for both my parents and FI parents.  what are you doing? Each set is contributing to the wedding, but we are paying for the majority ourselves.  Our parents have been extremely helpful throughout the planning process so we would like to give them something to show our appreciation.  How much to spend?  Ideas?

thanks!

  • we are doing gift cards to local restraunts that they love so they can go out to eat one night.... just enough on the card for a complete meal for both...

  • We are going to make them a wedding album after the wedding. We are pretty much at our limit money wise and in the process of buying a house right now too. We told them that the gift would be late and they totally understand.

  • FI's grandmother is paying for the RD and we are getting her a gift card to her favorite nice restaurant in town.

My mother is footing 90% of the wedding costs, and has given us a more than generous budget, and has allowed me to plan a beatiful wedding costing a somewhat embarrassing amount, so FI and I bought her lovely pearl earrings and a bracelet, which will go great with her MOB dress!

My dad bought my dress on the spot for me, and has thrown money at us when we ask, and since he is a wine-o, we bought him a 6 month membership to one of his favorite vinyard's wine club.

Perhaps a bit above and beyond, but when they have done the same for us, it just seemed to fit.
  • FI and I are paying for everything ourselves neither my Mom or his Dad have given us any money for the wedding.  My mom is walking me down the aile and so is my Grandma.  I did get FFIL a nice bottle of scotch from Scotland when I was there since he really likes scotch.

However, I have no idea what I am going to get my mom or my Grandma as a thank you for walking me down the aile.  Any suggestions?

  • My mother freaked out when I mentioned parents gifts. She said that it's just another ridiculous and over-the-top thing that people do these days. She insisted I NOT get them anything but I really want to since they have done so much for our wedding. There was talk of us all going next year to a pro drag race event so I may surprise them and pay for the tickets ahead of time or something like that.

My dad is paying for about 75% of the wedding. I am planning on getting him a few things. The big present before the wedding will be a clock I found a week or so ago. He is big into sailing and work work and the clocks are custom made with carved nautical maps. Here is an example:

I haven't decided yet if I should get the area where our summer cottage is or the area where the wedding will be on the clock. The company (nnchart.com) makes bigger pieces too that are gorgeous but only the clocks are in my price range.

After the wedding I want to give him a framed copy of two photos of us together - one of us at my wedding and one from when I was a flower girls in a family friend's wedding.

I'd like to get my mother a bottle of perfume but I am not sure how to figure out which one she'd like. I may just get her a gift card for a department store and let her pick one out there.

My sister is helping with the addressing of invitations so i want to get her something small. Not sure what yet. maybe a restaurant gift card so she and her husband can have a date night.

My dad, sister, and mother, and FH's father will also get photo albums after the wedding - maybe for Christmas?

scurtis - I love the idea of the wine club. It would be great for my MoH but they just started TTC so hopefully she won't be able to drink much longer!

  • We are paying for the wedding 100% ourselves, but as a thank you for emotional support, we got our parents and FI's grandmothers custom calligraphed mats with our first song and pretty frames and we're gonna put in a picture of us from our engagement shoot and then they can replace it with a wedding picture if they want.

  • This might sound terrible but we aren't buying them gifts.  We love them dearly but we are paying for the wedding ourselves 100% and have not asked for assistance with any projects.
