To exit or not to exit?

Hi! I am getting married next month and need help with the "exit." I can't decide whether or not to do an exit because the place where we are holding the reception is also where we and several of our guests will be staying the night.  The event coordinator told me that in the past couples have done the traditional exit drove down the road to an ice cream shop and then came back.  I've also thought of our exit just being us walk up the staircase to our room.  What do you think? Should we even have an exit?

We are staying at our venue that night, but we are toying with an exit and heading to a bar downtown instead of jumping in a getaway car or something.

I've also considered doing something as we leave the ceremony instead, since we have to walk back across the street to the reception.

I'm not so good with the advice... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

Is there a certain time people need to be out of the reception venue?

I can only tell you that from my experience, we didn't do one and I wish we had, for practical reasons. (For the record, I'm probably unusual -- I never wanted to do one, because I don't care much for them in pictures and don't like doing them when I'm a guest.)

We ended things at midnight, and the place had to be emptied and clean at 1 a.m. per our contract. People were still standing around talking at 12:30, even though the bar/DJ had stopped and staff were running around cleaning up! They didn't even notice when I'd left. It made for a little bit of frustration at the end of the night that wouldn't have happened if we'd had a big old exit that got people out of the ballroom and kind of forced them to be on their way.

Our reception was at the hotel we were staying at.  The guests lined up from the ballroom to the elevator.  We ran down the aisle, got on the elevator and went up to our room and it worked fine.  As you can see by my siggy, our photographer followed us and we took some shots going in to the room and in the room itself.

Our guests were then free to do what they wanted:  leave, go to the bar, go to their rooms, etc.
